TORONTO'S GREAT CARPET HOUSE. The notable advantage, apparent no all visitors here, is that in the selection of carpets they have the choice of not only all the new pat- terns shown everywhere, but also an additional large number of new patterns which are shown nowhere else. It is the very complete and unusually large variety--not only in styles, patterns and grades of carpets but also in prices--which gives this house a special distinction not shared by any other carpet concern in Toronto. We have carpets as low as 20 cents per yard, and the prices range from that to $3 per yard, "and some of the patterns in our 20-cent grades are the carpets usually offered elsewhere at 35 or 40 cents. As the largest importers .of carpets, we are always able to quote lowest prices. RoR, Carpet House 14 & 16 King St. East. Put Out Their Eyes. Windsor, July 22.--Adolphus Mart- in, of Maidstoue, is the alleged origin- ator of an atrocious means of prevent- ing swine from finding their way into hix crops. He was arraigned in the Windsor Police Court before Judge Bartlet yesterday to answer to the charge preferred agaiust him by Con- stable Vanderlinder, for cruelty to animals. He 1s a brother to ex-Ald, Martin, and is one of the wealthiest farmers in the copnty. © The court room was crowded to hear the testi- mony, and a number of witnesses were examined, who gave conflicting evi- dence. Michael Koffiski stated that while working for Martin some pigs broke through a low fence into a field of oats and potatoes. His employer ordered him to catch one, and he and another man held the animal while Martin cut out its eyes with a knife, Healieges that Martin then put salt into the sockets and said he would leave the animal without food for sone time, : Joseph Komenski, another witness, said he helped to hold a pig that had broken into a crop and was caught after being chased, and said that Martin cat the brute's eyes from their sockets with a knife, and then puta quauatity of salt into them, Samuel Manillioux stated that he had examined one of Martin's hogs after it was said the diabolical opera tion had been done, and found its sockets closed and running with matter. = The case was adjourned at the request of the defendant's solicitor uvutil Wednesday, Six month's im- prisonment, or $50 fine, or both, is the greatest penalty for the offence ac- cording to the Ontario statutes. Going the rounds now isa report from the New York Herald of 'the first death from a locust sting.' The locust has no sting, and its bite is of little consequence, ----a The Cardwell Sentinel bragged of 'barley around Cookstown over two feet high! The Eran followed with the proud boast that 'Charles Lundy, of Newmarket, earried to the city and exhibited at the Board of Trade rooms, a handful of rye stalks over seven feet high--this year's growth, too.' The Beaverton Express says: 'This may be big for Newmarket, but a story is told here of a certain tinsmith who had on exhibition last year a sample of hay grown in Carden which measur- ed over fourteen feet in the stalk, and it is said to have been n poor year for hay in that section,' Mark Twain, when asked to name the three biggest liars in the United States, said Chaun- cey Depew was one, and Eli Perkins was the other two. On the voters' list our Beaverton confrere prohahly counts only one, but in the field of fiction he must be surely entitled to a double number. HOUSEAND TWO LOTS For Sale, Cheap. Apple-Tree One learns strange fasts, ev this beautiful and quiet spot. Here is a sample -- ln chatting with Mr. Y Dues) a millowner ut Grimsl illage, a few diys 0, he sa that he had suwh en will 15,180 feet of apple-tree lumber, All this was cut from sound, gieen trece that had Leen cot down. To produce the this lumber required one thousand trees, some of which were 22 inches in diameter. This means that 2,000 atred of Jand had been de- nuded of orchard for the average is 50 trees to the acre. The explanation was that the apple cfop had been nl- most 4 failure here for some years, and the tendency is towards "siiall fruits, which grow in perfection and give much more profitable returns, And here isa note for farmers.-- There are hundreds of bushels of the common red cherries now on the trees and which will never be gathered. -- This fruit is most valuuble for domes: tic use, but the whole crop has been abandoned to the worms that infest it. The birds are having a picnic, but thousands of dollars. might have been saved if the trees had beefi sprayed in time.
