Spring Wheat 45¢ to 500, ; i ge Tender discussing the condition of wheat growing it. America as revealed by the Agricultural. Bourd, says that the Americati farmer must in the end ise prices or abandon wheat growing. American railways and steamers will someday. cease to carry hia freight for almost nothing. Tt adds that it is true that Russia, Argentine and Indin must be reckoned with and that the last 'two countries have not reached the lowest price at which whet can be profitably produced. It is reasonable to regard the present price of wheat and indeed of most wholesale commod- itics as an ®ccentric transient pheno mena. Tho return of prices to their natural level may - be asssisted by the abundance of gold promised by new discoveries, but hobody can attempt to any when the balance will be depressed The worst is that every farmer. will have to decide before long what area he will sow with wheat. Inthe mean- true that the benefit sometimes is in: tercepted, as in the case of California fruit befors it reached the consumer. still the profit goes somewhere and the wonderful extension of the fruit trade 'is a plain sign that the middle man is not all-powerful in evil undoubtedly our farmers suffer. Opinions differ ar to whether the benefit outweighs tle loss, but certainly UgFoou wunity benefits largely. Big ¥ Fire. A very dissatrous fire osclirred at midnight of Friday last in Goodwood; the large carriage works and handsome brick residence of Mr. Wm. Todd was destroyed. Every building on the piace wns burned down--the house, blacksmith and woodwork shop, drying house, show rooms and stables. Mr. Todd has a very vice driving team and fu trying to save them wis severely kicked. He crawled from the stable and got around by another door to the fred room where he cut the halter Ho was kicked in the side. A mess. enger arrived in Uxbridge about 4 o'clock Saturday morning for his brother, 8.B. The theory of incendiarism, - howcver, is lieved. pica a few weeks ago in Mr. Todd's shop lends a color to the theory. The Town is in for it Now. On the appeal of the township of North Monaghan Tuesday, Justior Ferguson granted an interim injurttion restraining the town from constructing the outfall sewer upon the highway of that township. The town 1s thus placed in a most etibnrrassing situation,"and one that is likely to prove most costly. The work on the sewer was stopped Wednesday, as Mr. Edmison, counsel for the town. ship, and the sheriff, drove down and warned the contractor that to procee:| would be taken as contemp' of court and action would be taken necordingly. Although the stopping of the work is hard enough, that is not the worst of it, as through their solicitor, the township has issued a writ for damages, which was this morning placed in the hands of the Sheriff for service. The amount of damages is placed by the township at $10,000. Mr. Edmison, during the afternoon, prepared a paper for service, warnihg the corporation that unless the highw uy was restored to the sme condition in which it was, prior to heing torn up by the corporation, within a perind of five days, that the township would em- ploy labour oh work at thie town's ex pense, tin » ourtatn and speedy ours for & oon in the Head and Oatarrh in all stages.
