"If you ask me whethér we lawyers ever encourage, aid and abét tintruth- fulmess," sald an elderly attorney at a dinner recently, "1 can only ask as a reply: 'Does any one know what truth is? I won't say whether ft Was a murder or a divorce, but the clearing of my client, the de fendant, depended entirely on his abil- ty to prove that when he walked down a certain corridor of a certain summer hotel he was accompanied by two per sons. It happened that he was seen by the housekeeper of the hotel, a woman of more than ordinary intelligence, and she insisted that there were three in the party and not simply two, as the prosecution claimed. It was {mpossi- ble to shake her testimony, and we carried the day. The housekeeper dled a year or so later. I beard it through ber priest. He commented on the fact that she had always taken great satis faction In the thought that her testi 'mony cleared my client. W. J. GAGE. Toroxto, Can., Dec. 1, 1904. Dzar Fniexo, We again come to you with our story of trouble, but a story of surprising and en vouraging resulta. No apology is necessary ; the great work of the National Sanitarium Association, ied on at the Muskoka Cottage Sawa- um snd Free Hospital for Consump- Homes plead for §o i The large number of lives saved, of those who a few years ago were supposed to be "under sentence of death," gives a right to your sympathy. In helping to rescue a number great enough to constitute a large prosperous village, the giving back to home and friends a regiment of workers, surely will arouse interest in this work of mercy. Each patient cared for in our Consump- tive Homes, removes a source of danger, so that the life of every citizen in Canada is more secure. The marvellous decrease of 40 per cent. in three years in the death-rate in Ontario from consumption proves that the fight Against this dread disease is no losing one. The Muskoka ¥ece Hospital for Consnumptives, for which this appeal is made, without any endowment keeps an open door to all who are poor and sick, as long as a vacant bed remains. Nearly 400 patients have been cared for in this Hospital since it was opened less than three years ago. This has only been if © $26,000 was received last year by the work ? Trustees of the Free Hospital for Con sumptives through contributions and be quests. $50,000 should be given this year if the Board is to provide for the increased ac commodatiou and maintenance of those pleading for admission. The official Report of the Sorroinry of the Provincial Board of Health tells a surprising story--a story of a winning fight, showing that from 1897 up to 190C there was a steady increase in the death-rate from Tuberculosis. From 1900 there has been a large de- crease each year, reducing tho death- rate from 3,484 to 2,072 in three years, or over 40 per cent. This is all the more remarkable in view of the increase in population. You have the joy of knowing that your dollar has helped in this merciful work. The pitiful part of it all is in knowing how many more lives could have been saved the needful money had boen forthcom- ing to provide additional beds. Will you not join in this great life-saving i Your dollar will bring gladness. Fifty dollars will keep a_sick one for two months ; may save a life, Three hundred dollars will endow a bed for a year.
