One wonders if is not some connection between thie secularism and the inordinate number of these curses commonly called divorces which are issued in this country--curses, at any rate, when obtained for such slight reas- non-support, and such-like. So common are they tbat some daily papers publish lists 'of those who have just obtained divorces almost as regularly as the time-houored list of births, matriages and deaths. Here is also a list nearly every day of those who have just been granted licenses to marry. Except for the one cause, that mentioned by the Master, the Church has always con- demned divorce, knowing the in- evitable tesult; and it is satis 'to see that some very prominent men in. the State also are their eyes. opened to BR me, er, and are advocating glea strictness fn this matter. Not ---- since a "priest out here Zhar- acterized successive divorces as consecutive polygamy ; and but few will question the justice of his de: finition. Let us turn to a less repulsive topic. For two months or more ripe straw= borries have been in the market here, but in the large cities they can be | bought every day in the year. Asthey are not forced, but are grown jn ordin- ary gardens the price is not extrava- gant even in winter. Just now we are paying a nickle a box for them, or 8ix boxes for a quarter. Strange tosay, though, pine apples and bananas are much cheaper in Toronto than in this semi-tropical country; in fact, I have sometimes brought both these fruits in Port Perry for about two-thirds of what they cost in Upland. But, on the other band, pomeloes (grape fruit), lemons, and oranges can be had for next to nothing, -for absolutely nothing if you This is especially true this season, for the trees have been un- usually prolific, and you find oranges lying about in all directions. A Petition from the Reach Town- ship Telephone Company, request-- ing the Council to pass a By-law giving the said Company power to erect poles and wires thereon along the pnblic highways of the munici- fruit has not vet finished. It began last November before the oranges were nearly ripe, for the eastern people must have some for Thanksgiving Day; but in January it was quite common to 8ee the men in their shirt sleeves, picking | oranges beneath an Italian sky and the | brilliant sunshine coming down on them through the branches. This year's crop has been, as 1 said, unusually | larga, and even yet many of the pack- | ing houses are working day and night to get it shipped to the east. Last month | one of the houses here shipped in single | week one hundred and thirty car loads, that is, about five thousand boxes. Some | women, who are expert packers, earn no longer than the regular hours.
