Lord Lyons in Communication with Mr. nit Seward, hd i WHAT THE CONEEDERATES THINK ABOUT THE or CRISIS: Fatuen Pont, Dee 23, 10 a.m.--Light southerly air last mght, and quite mild, drove the ico from the shore. Dail cloudy liazy on river; appearance of snow ; a good deal of ice 10 be seen this moruing, is pro- bably that driven from shore last night ; would be no obstruction to a steamer. No signs of stoamship. New York, Dec. 22.--The Times' des- pateh say « that notes on the subject of the Trent aflair_had passed between Mr. Se- wand and Lord Lyons, but not on the events of the controversy. Lord Lyons requested 10. know if our. Goverment was ready to' consider the despatches forwarded by his Government. Mr. Seward replied that he wae not ready, but would notify Lord Lyons of his readiness. Wasmivoton, Dec. 21.--In reference to the encounter near Drainaville, it is slated that in the pockets of dead rebels were found Richmond papers of the 19th inst., but they contained no news of partionlar interest. Several lotters were found ou the bodies of rabel officers, showing 'an intense hostile feeling in the South against the North. Tn one of these letters, dated Centreville, 19th ingt., addressed to a friend, and but partly finished, it was said it was impossible for the Federals to remain much longer iu their position ;--that the effect of the news [from Enz'and and the pressure of Congress would necessarily compel McClellan to advance-- that in such event, a victory on the part of the Confederates wn their present position, would be certain. Awevican War ews. From the New York Tribune, It seems as if there need be no serious dif- ficulty in settling the Mason and Slidell case. According to the accounts which have reached us from England, the act of Capt. W Ike is" pronounced by legnl advisers of the Government regular and in conformity with the law of nutions up to the point of the removal of the rebel emissaries from the deck of the mail steamer. The stoppage in transitu, and the search, were entirely in accordance with the dicta of Stowell and other British authorities, but the 7'vent should, 1t seems have been brought into'port, and the question of contraband passengers submitted to the decision of a Court of Ad- miralty. Now, if this turns out to be tie theory of the English Government, the whole case a hits of a very easy and pacific seitlement. Let Captain Wiles proceed to Boston in the San Jacinto, let him take Messrs. Mason and Shdell on board, proceed with them to the Bahama Channe land restore them satus in quo by placing them on the deck of the Trent, with an ample apology for his irregu- lar proceeding. The honor of the British intention to resign should further camplica- tion ensue. and painful evidences of sudden hostility tv our cause have been shown. The general feeling, however, appears to be a' sincere regret at what they regard as the tnevitable Shetilo or FpRA Agen Telegraph of Thuré- y. r ? { 8 In other cases, extraordinary | Course of Lectures to be delivered in the Mechanics' Hall this Winter, iskiineR 12, Rev. PROPOSED MEXICAN TREATY. New York, Dec. 21. The steamship Hansa sailed to-day with and $260,000 in specie. Glas ow also sailed. The Tribune learns that among the pa- person Thursday transmitted to the Senate concerning Mexican affairs, was the project of a treaty with Mexico, the provisions of which are of such importance that it is even thought it would, if confirmed, lead to the withdrawal of England and France from the Spanish alliance. It provides that onr Government shall pay $11,000,000 to Mexico to be applied to the satisfaction of English and French creditors, and fora giant to the United States of com- mercial privileges, the adjustment of our outstanding debts, and the right of transit across Mexican territory for troops and mu- nitions of v [1 ix thought that the treaty y confirmed and sent at once ; The Heral to onr latest" lespatch says :--According ices from Washington, ap- a rapture with England upon rent aflair ray be dismissed. -- Our Cabuiet, wo are informed, looking to the absorbing and paramount issue, the sup- pression of the Southern rebellion, will yield to the present demands of England as the condition of her neutrality, even if thes demands involve the restoration of Mason | and Slidell to the protection of the British | flag, and a disavowal of and apology for their seizure by Capt, Wilkes. Later from Washington, INTERVIEW BETWEEN LYONS AND SEWARD SAID TO BE SATISFACTORY. WasgingToN, Dec. 23. We legrn that Lord Lyons had to day an- other interview with Mr. Seward. It is un- derstood, upon what seems to.be good au- thority, that the meeting was friendly in its character, and satisfactory in its result. _ Low! Lyons, who some days ago had been in doubt" whether he could in tranquility enjoy his Christmas dinner, formally re~ newed his previous invitations after conver- sation with the Secretary of State. A Cabinet meeting is to be held to-mor- row, at which it is thought the case will be thoroughly discussed. New York, Dec. 24. The steamship America, from Liverpool; oi Halilax, arrived here at eleven o'clock this morning. Her news almost entirely anticipated. y "The steamship Adriaticand several other larg: steamers at Southampton, were ex- pected to be chartered by the British Gov- ernment. It was stated that the British Life Guards had volunteered for foreign rervice. The Government was about to send a number: of 'non eommissioned officers to drill the Canadian Militia. Geo. I. This opinion, however, is based upon. ro official commu- nication, and, while it excites some unplea- rant feeling, carries no weight.
