GREGATION---A BSOENE, (Fromthe Londonderry Standard.) The latest innovocation in the usage and custom of the established Church of Scot: land in the celebration of { partiage publicly in Church before the congregation, instead of privately atthe residence of parties, the former mode, it is alleged being in conform- ity with the Directory of Public works and the ancient practice of the Presbyterian Church. Apropos of this innovocation, the follow ing incident may be related. It probably occured in the ancient times referred to but the date is not material :-- The afternoon service had ended and the -------------------------------------- years afterwards, when I had risen to somé eminence at the bar, and when I had a seat in parliament, on my return one day from the court | found an old gentleman asleep in my drawing-room, his feet familiarly placed on each side of the Italian marble chimney-pence, and his whole air bespeak> ing the conciousness of being quite at homer He turned round ; it was my friend of Ball Alley ! I rushed instinctively into his arms and burst into tears. Words cannot des> cribe the scene which followed. * Yon are nght sir--you are right. The chimney piece Is yours~the pictures are yours--thé house 18 yours. . You gave me all | have-- my friend, my benefactor!" He dined with me ; and in the evening I caught the tear gli g in his fine blue eye; when gregation were arranging th Ives for the b di , when to the ifest inter- est of the worshippers, the good parson de- scended from the pulpit to the desk below and said in a calm clear voice :-- " Those wishing to be united iu the holy bonds of matrimony will now please come forward." A deep stillness instantly fell over the congregation, broken only by the rustling of the silk, as some pretty girl or excited mat- ron changed her position to catch the first view of the couple to be married. No one, h arose, or { the least inclined to rise. Whereupon the worthy olergyman deeming the first notice unheard or miss. understood repeated : -- ¢ Let those wishing to be united in the holy bonds of matrimony now come for- ward." Still no one stirred. The silence became almost inaudible, and a painful sense of awkwardness among those present was felt, when a young gentleman who occupied a vacant seat in the broad isle slowly arose and deliberately walked to the foot of the altar. He was good looking and well he saw poor little Jack--the creature of his bounty --rising in the house of commons to reply to a right honerable. Poor Hoyse! He is now gone ; and no suiter had a larger deposit of practical benevolence in the court above. This is his winé --Jet us drink to his memory 1"? mr rie . SELECTION OF AN OCCUPATIONIN LIFE. Nothing ¢an be more essential 10 the success and happiness of man, than his fit> ness for the business in which he may en* gage for life. In view of the importance of this subject, we offer to the young readers of the Companion the fellowing reflections: Of the pations which man p for & livelihood, those which are simplest ate the best for his health and peace, so long as their products answers all-his honest neads. More of the wrong traits of human charac* ter spring from false, or uncongenial beou- pation, than from inherant sources, and it will be found upon observing carefully, that men, as & g | rule, are ing in their speeches, unsophisticated in their frank and direct in their dealings dressed, but no female panied his travels. 'When he arrived within a res- pectable distance of the clergyman he paused and, with a reverent bow, stepped 10 one side of the isle, but neither said any- thing nor seamed at all disconserted at the idea of being married alone. The clergyman looked anxiously around for the bride, who he supposed, was yet to arrive, and at length remarked to the young gentleman in an undertone. "The lady, sir, is dilatory." " Yes, sir."' Had you not better defer the ceremony." «I think not."" Do you suppose she will be here soon 7" ¢ Me, sir,"' said the young gentleman, "how should I know the lady's move- ments 7"? A lew moments more were allowed to elapse in this unpleasant state of expect- ancy, when the clergyman renewed. ¢ Did the lady promise to attend at the present hour, sir 7? ¢ What lady 2? ¢ Why, the lady to be sure, that you are waiting for." - ¢ Did not hear her say anything about it,' was the unsatistactory response. ¢ Then, sir, may I ask yon why are you here, and for what purpose you thus trifle n° (le sanctuary of The Nost -High?* said the somewhat enraged clercle. ¢ | came, sir, Bimply. because you invited all those wishing to be united in the holy bonds of matrimony to step forward: and I happened to entertain such a wish? I am very sorry to have misunderstood you, sir, and wish you a very good day ?, The betiediotion was uttered with a sol- emnily of tone very little in accordance with the twitching of thy facial nerves, and when, after the church was closed, the story got amongst the congregation; more than : one girl regretted that thie young gentleman who really wished to be united in the holy bonds of matrimony had been )oblidged to part without a wife. bY CURRAN"S GRATITUDE. ¢ Allow, me, gentleman,' said Cuttan one evening lo a large party, ' to give you a sentiment. When a boy, | was one morn- ing playing marbles at the village of Ball Alley, with a light heart dnd 4 lighter poc- ket. The glbe and the jest went gaily round, when suddenly thete appeated ati- ong us a stranger of a remarkable and very cheerful aspect. His intrusion was not the least restraint upon our therry littl§ assem- blage. He was a benevolent cteature; and the days of infancy (after all, the happiest we shall ever see) perhaps rose upon his memoty. Heaven bless lim! 1 see his fine forrii, at the distante of Half a centuty, just as he stood before me in the litle Ball Alley, in the days of my childhood. His name was Boyse ; he wasthe rector of New- market. To me he took d particular fancy. [ was winning and full of waggery --think- ing everything that was eccentrio, and by no means a miser of eccentricities ; every one was welcome to a share of them, aid I had plenty to épare after having freighted: the compaily. Some easily | the in proportton as their life-pursuits are sim* ple. And as man is ever more noble in hi ordinary characterythan when he puts on the mask of artifice; Bdpeakitig what he thinks and acting what te feels with an earnestness that inspires faith in his sincer= ity, it cannot be difficult to demonstralé that this unpatented nobility is more natu ral to the life of the farmer, the artisan, thé mechanic or the man of whatever useful lubor that has fixed a simple rule. A greater manliness is the necessary out growth of these open occupations. He who follows them, plainly tells In his labor what he is about and commits its value to thé common judgement. He need not fly to the subtleties of speech like the lawyer; nok disgrace his practice like the physician j nor hide the deflects or exaggerate the vir- tues of his wares like the merchant. These avocations, of necessity, jnatural or acquir- ed, require an address which ls too often allied with craft and cunning, and which, though it may scorn open falsehood, doés not disdain' duplicity and deceit. Thé oc cupation of thie trader, of whatever class is vastly more 'inspiring of selfishness and craft than that of the producer of the thing traded ing This is apparent to the common= est observation. How unwisely do multitudes of parents) 1 they-desire the greatest-good-for- them; -- select the life 1] of their child And mulitudes of men Jo not seldct with more wisdom for themselves. If, instead ot health of body and peace of mind, the greatest worldly gain and hotoriety were the grand desideratum then the more craft; chicane; the; better the occupation. But this, with the more reflecting, will not bé the rule so long as simplar means can be made to answer every rational feed of life-- Literary Companion. ------------ THE LITTLE SOLDIERS. ¢ Wife," said a man when the war broke oul, ¢ I must enlist. If it is necessary fo my neighbors to go. il 1s for me to go. can't stay at hme edsy anyhow. ¢ Oh, William, must you ?" said his wife sorrowfully, *must you? How tan I and the boys get along alone ?* «Yes, father, go,' crigd little Will, ¢I think you ought to go. They won't take us, or we'd go in your stead. Some of the family ought to go to keep the tafiily cred= it gooa.
