One hundred years, and the child on whose puth the snows of winter are now falling, and the old man who for four scotg has marked tie blossoms fade, will have ¢ passed away,' REE » WOODEN NALLS, In these days of millions of iron, copper, and zine nails, tacks «ill brads, of lightnii golf-feeding, and almost antomauc oy machines, it is wonderful to find wooden nails coming into use. Wooden pegs made by the same machines as shoe pegs, are now largely used for fastening boxes, and manufacturers receive large orders from the West, for inch pegs for this purpose. In China, Japan and Hindoostan, pegs of bam- boo have been always used in fastening tea chests and wooden packages. In this age however, it looks like retrogression to use to use wood for purposes for which iron seems 60 much better adapted. As one of the curions ficaks of the habit, so igherent in human nature, to féturr. to former cus= toms under the impression thai they are novelties, the above is noteworthy ; but we do not appreciate a fall in cut nails from . this cause. The jdea of using wooden nuily seems to us a good ane. The treenayly nsed in ship building aie an example of the value of such wooden nails. The rust. ing of naile exerts a very destructive actien on timber, and thia will be totally avoided by the ase of woodun pins. Moreover, it is almost certain that before . many years pass away, wood will become: so valuable that it will not pay to use the material of packing boxes for firewood, as is at present done Now, so long as iron naila nye used, it becomes a difficult matter, and one invol- xing the rapid destruction of tools, to use old Inmber.
