Jonés Bros' Column, Esmee Derives its name from the City in which it was first made, viz: Calicut, in India. The printing of Cloths dates as far back as the first century, al- though not practiced in England uni about the seventeenth. The English now excel all other nations, both as to durability and beauty of colorings. -- Hoyles' and Ashton's goods are gener. ally acknowleged to be the best, and may always be had at Jones Jos, who pay particular attention to select~ ing the best of fast colored goods, and are atall times prepared to furnish, at satisfactory prices, those they will ' . Warrant not to Fade. In former times, Calico was printed by hand with blocks, but eylinder printing 'has since been introduced, which is the greatest improvement that has ever been made in the art, the importance of which can scircely be over-rated, enabling JONES BRO, to offer the choicest goodsat a mere trifle of the price paid in times gone by, when a print grown, was considered, by our grandmothers; a real luxury. In some of its forms, not the most complete, it is stated that a mile of calico can be printed off with four dif- ferent colors in one hour, and more ac~ curately and with better effect, than by hand blocks. One cylinder machine, attended by one man, can perform as much work in the same time as can one hundred men, with as many assistants. In a similar ratio, owinz to the im- mense variety and excellence of their stock, combined with wonderful cheap- "ness, * ' JONES BRUS. in all probability, sell more prints in a given time, than were sold in this entire County some years ago. The copper cylinders are from 30 tn 40 inches in width and from 4 to 12 in diameter. The pattern is complete araund the circumference of the roller, and each revolution of this exactly re-- peats it. Tn the large calico print works, the engraved copper rollers con stitute a very important item Jn the in- vestment of the capital, the value of the stock of these held by some print houses being rated even as high as $200,000. At one time, fifty" to one hundred .pieces of calico were considered by re- ailers a large stock, but to supply * their extensive trade Jones Bros, require annually from eizht hundred to one thousand pieces. Customers call- ing at their stores are astonished at the extensive variety and still more at their remarkable cheapness, especially their 10 and 124 cent goods, which are really excellent cloths and "warranted fast colors. : To produce all these variouscolorings, a separate cylinder is required for each one. They are set in a strong frame against the face of a large central drum, made of iron, and covered with woolen cloth in several folds, between which and' the engraved cylinders the calico id printed as 1t passes. ; _ Prints are of many kinds and qualities. The heaviest are not always the best, but those that have the same sized chain and filling, closely woven and evenly made from good cotton, are generally she best. Although Canadians have not yet inroduced the printing of calico, they have attained a great degree of rlection in the manufacture of cottons, Lanadian cottons now rank equal if not . superior fo the English. keep both Kinds in all the various grades and qualities, and after several years 'experience are satisfied the Canadian ers, being easily urable.
