leave town were shot down. = The ~ marks of an axe, taken from nearly . News frém Mexico." . By Mexican letters dated at Vera | Cruz, April 12, and Mexico city, April 8, the capture of Puebla by Coburg, yesterday morning early, Porfiri is confirmed, a full particulars are given. The city was taken only after an obstinate resist ance, and the Liberals killed sixty- three. of the Imperial officers after ge _ their surrender. Marquez who had escaped from Queretoro and arrived at Mexico city, with extraordinary powers conferred by the Emperor, appeared before Puebla soon after its capture with four thousand men, too late, however, to rejnforce the garrison. Diazimmediately engaged and defeated him, capturing guns and ammunition, but not Marquez himself. The siege of Vera Cruz was progressing with spirit. Solid shot and shell were being hurled daily into the city, and the condition of the citizens was distressing. A flag of truce had arrived announcing the fall of Puebla and the execution of | Barl imperial 'ufficers, and demanding capitulation, guaranteeing that no lives should be taken among the prisoners if the town "surrendered before the 15th inst., but after that no guarantee could be expected. The answer to thik communication is not known, but it is reported that ano- ther flag, later in the day was fired upon from the walls. aximillian wus stiflelosely invested in Queretoro | and among liberals the opinion pre-- vailed that he would receive the same treatment, in the event of his capture, as had been accorded to the prison- rs of Diaz. A portion of Quereto- ro was beseiged by the Liberals on the 30th of March, only two streets in the town remaining to the Imperi- alists. The, condition of the be- sciged is represented as horrible, and the speedy capture of the town was regarded as certain. « The dead im-- perialists remained unburied, and the hungry citizens who attempted to attempted flight of Maximillian is confirmed, and it is further reported that six hundred imperialists suec- «ceeded in making their escape. nis P CHEERING Prospects.--From all parts of the Province most encoura- ging reports are received concerning the crops. The condition of the wheat is so favorable that, if no in- Jury befall it, we may expect the most bountiful harvest that we have had for many years. The fruit pros- pects are also good. In some locali- ties the peach germs were killed by the severity of the winter, but the re- ports af@s-generally indicative of an average yield of peaches, and of more than average yield of other fruits. Farmers are now busy with their spring seeding. Tr localities where only spring wheat can be raised successfully, the farmers are engaged in stirring their fullows preparatory to sowing. With them much de- pends upon early seeding, and the weather is now favorable, The win- ter wheat crop, however, is the lead- ng agricultwial staple, and unless the crop shall suffer from the weevil, rust -or other of its enemies, the harvest will be usually plentiful.--Hamalton Times. A Curiosiry.--We were last week :shown, by Mr. John Misener, a piece of white oak bearing distinctly the the heart of an old tree. By examin- ation of the tree and computation, it has been.ascertained that the marks were made no less than two hnndred and fifty yearsago. The tree was then a sapling, and in its vigoroust growthi™ad extended over the cuts, but the marks remained in the heart of the tree. The cut surface was very' hard and in a good state of preserva: tion, haviug been for the last two-and. a-half centuries excluded from all ex- ternal influences. The tree stood on the farm of Mr. Hensler, a short dis- tance west of the neighboring village of Thorald, and the curiosity became apparent in splitting the body for fence-stakes. The tree must have been cut about-the time Champlain discovered Lakes Huron and Nipiss- ing.-- Welland Tribune, Curious STORY ABour A PETRIFIED Bopv.--A letter. from Vicksburg, of recent date, gives an interesting ac- count of the National Cemetry, loca- ted two miles north of the city,on" a beautiful height overlooking the majestic Mississippi riyer--land on which is to be deposited the remains of from thirty to forty thousand Un- ion soldiers, all belonging to the Western States, It Sompriges forty acres, purchased by the Government for that purpose, Already several thousand bodies have been interred. One peftified body has been exhumed under a sand-bar that has been a long time under water. No mark or name can be found, but it was the body ofa Captain. Not only were the face, hair, whiskers,&c., perfectly natural, but every part of the uniform although one mass of Sipe, was tect. So great was its Weight that it came near sinking the skiff in taking it ashore. Tt had been a very large, fine looking man.
