Va on the Rofcim Bill ensures its-preser" vation. . The death sentence of the convict ot Fenian Doran has been comauted 'to along term of imprisonment. ernment will not make public the real history of the recent Fenian 'uprising, on account of apprehended _ troubles with certain, foreign Gov- ernments which are involved in the plot. Haunted House, The Zanesville (Ohio) Courier, of April- 22nd, says :--The reside: ce, «No. 11, South Eighth street, corner of South, occupied by the Rev. Wil- liam Granville Pratt, pastor, of the First Baptist Church, bas, for a few nights past, been the scene of some strange noises, which have thus far been unaccounted for. Mr. Pratt and family commenced occupying the dwelling on or aboat the 1st of April. Nothing unusual occurred until Wednesday evening of last week. About ht If-past nine or ten o'clock of that evening, while Mr. Pratt and family were occupying the front room, in the second story, a low but distinct sound was heard at regular intervals, apparen(ly as if some person was striking the earth 'with a piece of timber, resembling "Sg:ery much the sound made by driv the earth around a post. The sound apparently came from the cellar of of the building, and continued for something over half 'an' hour, when | P! Mr. Pratt went down into the front * parlor, on the first floor, where the sound could be distinctly heard, being apparently just under. neath'in the cellar, and on opening the door leading to the ccllur stairs the noise changed position, and sermed to be near the ' centre of the garden, in the rear of the dwelling. Search was made there when the sound changed position, ./7 nnd again seemed to be in the cellar, and so continued to move about from place to place as he approached the scene of the noise, It could be heard in every room in the house, seeming to come from the cellar, and in those rooms most distant the noise could be heard most distinctly. The noise was kept up until daylight, when it ceased. On Thursday evening, about ten ". o'clock, the noise again commenced, and scemed to be in the cellar, A search was at once commenced by the family; also a lady friend re aining with them over night, bat ith no better success than on the preceding evening, Thenoise would change position or ceasc altogether as they approached the place where it seemed fo be, Search was kept up to a late hour, but without any discovery. On Friday and Saturday nights the same noise was heard, and continund until daylight, when it ceased. On last night the family retired early to rest and no noises were heard. These sounds, or noises since the first evening, commence about ten o'clock, and continue until morning. They have become very annoyicg especially to Murs. Pratt, Mr. Pratt says he fecls satisfied that they are not produced emotes, | neither by spiritual, but he is unable | | to discover their cause. a ha -- i ae iesetent --_-- " CLEVER AND JUST. --A Paris paper | - concocts the following reply on be-|- half of England to the common con- tinental asseverations that that coun- try has lost her influence and is a|.. id or fourth rate power, &e,, :-- 'If to systematically stand aloof |" yp, from all tle great Enropcangques- tions is to give rise to none, ovident- ly your reproach'is well founded; if to be oae of the richest, the most in. as telligent, and, above all, one of the freest nations in the world, sufficient to give prestige, wo certain ly have none; however, we do very |:- the well without any.
