The pulpit of the Baptist church was occupied last Sabbath morning By Rev. W. E. Norton, of Toronto, general superintendent of Baptist Home Missions in Ontario and Quebec, who gave a very interest- ing and instructive address upon the character and extent of the work being done by the'Board in these two provinces. Mr, Norton has held the office of superintendent for nearly six years, but this was his first official visit to Port Perry and it was very greatly enjoyed and appreciated by the congregation. Silver Wedding. - The home of Mr, and Mrs Dan- iel McDermott, on Scugog St Port Perry, was the scere of a very happy - gathering of {riends' last Thursday afternoon May 2nd, the occasion being the celebration of the twenty fifth anuiversary of their weddibg day. In Baysville, Muskoka, where they were resid: ing in 1882 this worthy couple was united for life by Rev. Mr. Cole, minister of the Anglican church, Several of the years that have in- tervened since that day they spent upon Scugog Island, and now for about five years they have resided here in Port Perry. The celebration cn Thursday last passed off .very pleasantly in- deed, and will linger. many a day among the delightful memories of 'all those who. participated in it. Death of Mr. Mungo Weir, It becomes our sorrowful duty this week to record the death of another of the oldest and most highly. honored residents of this community, After an illness of several weeks, during which hope and fear alternated in the bosoms of his relatives aud friends, Mr. Mungo Weir at length succumbed to the disease which had laid its hand upon him, and on Monday last, the 6th of May, he passed quietly away, Mr. Weir was born on Yonge St., north of Toronto, nearly sevesty- two years ago. 'A number of the years of his early life he spent in the township of Pickering, and there he was happily married. About forty years ago he came to reside in the township of Reach where he remained until about five years ago wheu he moved into Port Perry. Here he continued up to the time of lis death. An honorable, upright man, a good neighbor, a true friend, Mr. Weir was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaint- ances. That he enjoyed the confi- dence of the community was seen in the fact that time after time he was chosen to fill important offices inthe "township.
