The tide of temiperance senti- ment and conviction is steadily in- creasing throughout this province; Prohibitory * laws have 7 been framed, 2nd are being enforced, in many municipalities By the will of the people, It will not be Jong before the people of Port Perry, in common with those of other places, will find it desirable and necessary to make a pronounce- ment upon this- question. = Shall we have local prohibition? One of the first considerations business men will take into ac: count in connection with. this proposition is the probable effect which the adoption of a pro- hibitory measure would have up- on the business of the town. There is room here for a variety of opin- ions. Leaving out of sight for the moment the moral and social as- pects of the question we find its commercial aspect is of no little importance, This is the side of the question which thrusts itself upon the attention of the propertv owners and tax payers. Many men refuse to give their support to local prohibition because they think it would be detrimental to trade. If Port Perry, for instance, were to vote to close up its bar- rooms, these men say that the fatmers in the neighboring town- ships would go elsewhere to trade, because when they come to town they. must have their grog. We have no doubt that this is libel up- on the farmers. We think better than that of the men in the town- ships. - Many of these same men are among the very "strongest supporters and advocates -of- pro- hibition. They havealready voted the bar-rooms out of théir munici- palities. And we believe that with few exceptions they prefer ito trade in a no-license town. Let us see how local prohibition affects the prosperity of - those places where it has been adopted. We have before us the testimony - of a numberof business concerns in Peebles, Ohio, where local pro- hibition is now in force. Here is 'the statement of one of the hard: ware firms, dated April 11th; " 1907. "This is to certify that we have been in business here for the "past twenty years, With and with- out saloons, and wé'do hesitate 6 ~ state that the town is. far better and much more - prosperous with- out thao it was with them. We would not consent to ever again have saloons in Peebles. They. [impoysrish a large part of the} Webster's International Diction: | y has recently been 'published By the G. & C. Merriam Co, the enterprising publishers of 'Spring: field," Mass, = For accuracy of definition, correctness of * pro- nounciation,-and completeness of etymology; Webster's Internation: al stands unexcelled. It is the standard in: the United « States Government printing office, it has been adopted by England as the standard in the postal telégraph department, and its sale in Canada is largely in excess of that of any othér dictionary 'of 'similar 'scope. This new 'edition is thoroughly up-to-date and will be found per fectly reliable. It has been edited by a staff of the most competent scholars that. could be found. Thousands" of 'new words and phrases have been added to the former edition, and it has been not only enlarged 'but in many ways decidedly improved. © It stands to day as an inexhaustible storehouse of accurate and con- cise information. - 'We commend it to our readers as the best practical working dictionary of the English language."
