You know how the old theory ran. " We are all born in sin." "Man is prone to evil," and other sayings to the same effect. We know these time honored say- ings off by heart. They were used in our early infancy, and have been the basis of our religious experience as long as we can remember. If anyone said that we were born to smallpox and prone to diphtheria as the sparks fly upward, we should be properly indignant. But we will allow anyone to take it for granted that we are morally tliseased, and we will offer-no word of protest. In fact it is considered a mark of total depravity if a man will -not admit that " the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked» This Hobson's choice is about as generous treatment as was accorded to suspected witches in the days when trial by ordeal was common. In those '" good old days " women who were eccentric 'or unpopular were supposed to be in league with the devil and were brought up for trial. It is- said that they were thrown into the river. = 1f they swam they were witches: If they were drowned they were innocent. Along physical lines we haye e still ordeal, eS lines we try our fellows by stage, but along moral motives, and he loses faith in hil self because others have lost faith in him. : sSCUGOG On Wednesday, July 15th, th Methodists of the Head Church held a garden party at the home of M and Mrs. Thos, Graham, and would have been difficult to 1 more fuitable place to hold. is, .
