NUMBER ONE--PORT PERRY TO NAPANEE WE LEFT Port Perry on Thursday, July and. 'Tired of formal holidays to formal places: (with. special accommodation for tourists and summer boarders), we made up our minds to see this country at close range. Guide books and Pulmen sleepers are all vightin their places, but that trip to, Quebec and back on bicycles gave ns a yiew of the country it would be impossible to get in any other way. We hive not regretted our determination. Our first business was to map out the route we intended to take and to find outthe number of supposed necessities one can leave at home when to have the benefit of the use of them they must be carried along the whole journey. One thing we did wot leave at home---our'kodaks. We are glad we took them because a most interesting series of pictures were secur- ed of scenes that will be of life-long interest and which will never be duplicated. We took the kodaks for pleasure and education and a frying-pan aad other cooking utensils to help keep the.ivner man satisfied. Sometimes it became neoéssary to dine by the roadside, and we were prepared for such emergencies. This was partic- ularly true in the Province of Quebec. So long as we were in Ontario, there was no hesitation in going to the nearest farm house and asking for the accommodation of board aud lodging and the welcome was always héarty--the same as farmers here extend to a tired and 'hungry stranger. In Quebec it 'was different. Doubtless the habitant farmer would have been . just-as hospitable as his Outario'brother, but the language was different and we felt that we were foreigners. Our travelling was dotie' generally in the 'early morning and late afternoon, "Rising ak a wonderful I distance cotild be covered before wine gritei o'clock, ~Aboutithis time the sun would become unp easantly warm, and we sought cover until four or five in the afternoon, when we would make another start and travel itil nine or'ten in the evening. After leaving Port Perry we first went to Enniskillen acd' after a farewell to the folk went on to Bowmanville. "There are some fine orchards all'along the way. In fact the tract of couutry from Port Perry to Cobourg is one of the best in the world for growiug apples. = So far as this year's crop is concerned it may be said that early apples are a good crop, but: winter apples are a failure, Other crops are good ; much better than last year. Bowmanville is too near home to require description. but we might note in passing that it is famous for its piano factory and the large bequest recently left to the town by a former citizen. The roads are reasonably good until you reach Co- bourg, and then anybody who lacks '* sand," could get enough to set him up in'lite. = It reminds one of Uxbridge Township only much more so. Here the sand drifts in from the lake shore. 'Tall pine trees are almost buried by it. This yarn is not taken from Longfellow's Hiawatha, but'is an actual fact which many an unfortunate farmer in that district can verify" to his sorrow. Well let it drift, We can't stop it. Cobourg is a very pretty town, and very popular with the Americans, A number of them have built beautiful residen- ces. . The town is situated on the shores of Lake Ofitario, di- rectly across from Charlotte, the port of Rochester, N.V. There is a ferry communication between Cobourg and Char _ lotte, which helps to make the former place quite busy. One of the sights i is to see the daily arrival of seventy carloads ot % oo eaving Cobourg behind we made our way through Col- barne and Brighton to Trenton. a remarkable feature in the farming country adjacent to t entire absence of fences. "The land is all driftin, nd of course, and it'seems strange to wheel where cattle are allowed to'run and the crops k un comparatively rt of the farm.
