NAPANEE 10 GANANOQUE WE ARE PROGRESSING nicely. It did not take long to leave Napanee behind and get on the way to Kingston. The road heeds one of the best on the conti- nent. ~ There is no "trouble about statute labor. 'Dame Nature put the lime- stone rock right on the 'surface. There is very little soil of any kind on these roads. Naturally we made record time, and were soon in the historic city of Kingston. It reminds one some- what "of Quebec, but it is 'on a smaller scale, nor is it so imposing in its general appearance. Orie thing strikes the bicyclist unpleasantly--the streets _ - are abominable. One day somcthing less than a thousand years ago someone who didn't know any better dumped a quantity of large cobble stones on these streets. He did not consider it necessary to fill in: between the stones, as he doubtless thought that too much comfort tends to degen- erate mankind. = Well, 'well} he's dead now, and I wished his works would follow him~but they didn't. ; Kingston stands on the site of oki Fort Frontenac, and parts of the old fort remain until this day. There are also a couple of stone towers out in the river, doubtless built for the protection of the city, As everybody knows, Kingston is a military station. Nile ; The buildings are largely 'of limestone, and it is known as the Limestone City. ' The city proper is situated on the north: shore of the part of Lake Ontario which here merges Nnto the St, Lawrence. Pathe east of the city is a canal, hole:place has an dir of omelikeness. Tt was Sunday when we: were' in the city, and we did not see any street cars rnning.. The railway is half a mile from" the town andethe penitentiary two and a half miles. This latter place we only saw at a distance. When we left Kingston we passed over the canal, which Is spanned by a wooden bridge nearly _halfa mile long. After passing a few straggling houses, we found ourselves in a rugged, rocky country. - Here the scenery was megnificent but the roads 'were not. made specially for wheeling and there were worse to come. Not more than a mile from the 'road there was flooded very much as on. Scugog bridge last spring. Off came our boots and socks: Then, with our trousers rolled up above the knee, we waded for nearly half a mile. Had it not been that we saw a buggy cross this "stretch of flooded road, we would not have attempted it. «Gananoque, the next notable place on our route, could be made one of the most beautiful towns in Canada. The beauty of the natural scenery can scarcely be surpassed. It is situated on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, at the head of the famous Thousand Islands. = At the back of the town are the rocks and hills and before it a splendid river, dotted with islands Sha are suficiently romantic in appear- to be the homes of fairies. Some of them are crowned with palaces, others are: garlanded with trees set with jewels-of granite. To 'the town from the river at night is' a sight ta do your heart good. "It fairly glitters with electric lights. But amid all this* beauty and romance a_very prosaic spirit reigns in Gananoque, and this spifit is clothed with much smoke. It is a hustling spirit, full of nervous- energy, look in its eyes, and set firm lips. ~ Gananoque' and as you see the smoke and m here across to Clayton in the ours of the day.
