"MY HAPPIEST HOLIDAYS." ~~. "Ilove a gun," King George con- . fessed recently, 'but I am never qpite so happy as when I am fish- ing the pools:of the Dee, with the . long day before me." And it is while fishing these pools in the Royal preserves of rgeldie and Balmoral, remote from' Courts and the crowds of men, that His Majes- ty has spent some of the most de- lighttul days of his dife. Every spring for many years past the King has spent several weeks at Abergeldie, indulging to the full in his favorite pastime." Usually with only one companion, Sir Charles Cust, he makes his head- ~ quarters at a small, two-storeyed house, Abergeldie Mains, a few yards distant from the ancient castle. Here he leads the simple, primitive life, rising early, faring plainly, and living entirely for his sport. He usually starts at about ten o'clock in the morning, with his companion and a couple of attend: ants--Donald Stewart, His Ma- jesty's head gamekeeper, and Ar- thur Grant, the gillie, have mostly been his companions of the humbler sort--and he devotes the whole day to the rod, smoking mild cigarettes almost incessantly. About noon 'a carriage brings Iuncheon to thé pools where His Majesty is working; and after a smoke and rest on the bank fishing is resumed as long @s' the 'light lasts, when the return for dinner is made, © 'A pést-prandial: cigar and a gossip 'over the day's sport follow, and then it is early to bed for a: good night's rest before the next day's fishing. It was at these waters of Aber- geldie that the King first learnt the gentle art of wielding a rod, near- ly forty years ago, with his father and John Brown as mentors, and he still recalls his delight in landing his first fish one spring day in the early sixties, and .Brown's enthu- siastic 'Guid! Ye'll mak a braw feesher some day, Prince Geordie." HIS MAJESTY'S TACKLE. The King, we are told. uses an 18 foot split-cane,. steel-centered rod, in preference to. the green heart beloved of Dee fishermen, and most of his fish have been tak- en with the fly. As a caster he has few equals, and he is an expert in every form of tackle. Not long ago, it i8 said, so keen was he on testing a new form of tackle which had been sent to St. James's Palace for his inspection that he actually left a.levee which was in progress in order to gratify his curiosity. The weather has no terrors for His Majesty, andi during one ter- rible week of bMzzards, frosts, and howling gales he was out-all day at Abergeldie, and counted himself amply rewarded when, at the end of the week, he creeled a beauty of 9 pounds with the very last cast of the day. . Too often the people who will be called upon to pay the larger share of the cost of a good road in the country, know very well that they will not receive benefit from it in proportion to the cost. And too often, too, those who really stand to profit most by the construction of a road grudge the expenditure of a few ollars extra in taxes. At the Ninth Annual Meeting of; the Ontario Good Roads Associa- tion, held in Toronto last March, some interesting figures regarding the value and effects of good roads were given, Mr. E. M. Young, J. P., County Clerk Prince Edward County, stated that the value of farm land in Kent County had been increased by means of good roads $1,000 on every 100 acres. Mr. 8. G. Lowery, of Niagara Township, stated that in his township in one case eighty acres of land had im- mediately increased in value to the amount of $1,600 as the result of a construction of a good road, and he believed that if five miles of road, at a cost of 8,600 would im- prove 80 acres to this extent, it would improve the land on five miles of road to the extent of $35,000--a strong argument in favor of good go Reve : * 'While all the speakers at the Con- vention dwelt on the importance of good roads 'in. reducing the cost of transporting: goods to market, and in improving conditions of life on the farm, not one of them intimated that the selling value of any farm improvements would be increased value would all be in the land. Obviously the wise way to ap- portion the cost of roads would be to tax the land benefitted in pro- portion to the benefit received, which is indicated by the value of the land. \ Under the present systém the con- struction of a good means in- creased taxes on buildings'and im- provements, increasing by that a- mount the cost of buildings and improvements, and restricting their production, and also . ner prices for land, Then when roads are constructed people wonder at the incr cost of living. On the other hand, placing the tax on land value and leaving the buildings free, would tend to stimulate im- provements throughout the district affected and would to a certain ex- tent check the tendency to very rapid increase of land values, or at least of the prices at which land was held. Though it may seen peculiar to thousands who are unfamiliar with Southern Nigeria, it is a fact that here oysters actually grow on trees. All through the Niger Delta, where the creeks are tidal, there is a rise and fall of from six to seven feet of water. The suckers of the Man- grove trees which line the banks are covered with oysters from the points between high and low water, and although they are partaken of sparingly by the Europeans dwell- ing in these parts, they form one of the staple articles of native diet. There is little to distinguish them from the ordinary bivalve known at home. They have not the deli- cate flavor of a "Whitstable," how- ever, than which they are a good deal coarser. ~ One of the latest prominent tlemen to speak hly in Zam Buk's favour is Mr. C. E. Better be Over the Average When Young and Under When Old. _ At the twenty-first annual meet- ing of the Association of Life In- surance Directors some facts were build of men and women from the insurance man's point of view. In a big Life Insurance Company years to determine the exact influ- ence of build on longevity, says the Medical Record. It is suggested that a mistake has been made in as- suming that the average build at any age is the most favorable build at that age or the build from which it may be expected the most favor- able mortality will be sustained. For instance, figures show that at the age of 20 all risks from 24 per cent. overweight to 10 per cent. underweight are better than aver- age risks. Does it not then seem probable that the point of most fav- orable build is about half way from 24 per cent. overweight to 10 per cent. underweight, or in the neigh- borhood of 7 per cent. overweight! If this inference is correct the tables now used are too favorable to the underweights by about 7 per cent. At age 60. on the other hand, the super-standard risks begin at about 8 per cent. overweight and extend to about 22 per cent. underweight. The mean point between these ex- tremes lies at about 7 per cent. un- derweight and the conclusion ap- pears evident that the present table based on average weights is too high by about 7 per cent. At the intermediate ages, 30 "to 50, the mean point lies not at the zero but on the heavyweight side of the zero at the age of 30 and at the light- weight side of the zero at the age of 50, and only at the age of 40 is the table apparently correct. ee eee A SATIRIC GEM.
