Smut in Grain By the Ontario Department of Ag- riculture, Whitby. The Ontario Department of Agri- culture - Authorities 'have estimated from investigation that fully $5,000, 000 worth of damage was done to grain crops in the Province of Ontario last year by Smut. The exact cause of this sudden 'and severe outbreak is hard 10 explain, though it is known that the prevalence of Smut has been steadily 'increasifig from year to year, and it is thought that this, with unfavorable weather conditions, explains, in part atleast the cause for such severe damage last year. Loose Smut of Oats and Stinking Smut of Wheat are perhaps the two most injurious kinds of Smut the farmer has to deal with. The disease is spread by spores which are formed during the summer. Each particle of the dark powder, to which the Smutted ead of grain is reduced, is a spore or seed of the Smut, and is capable un- the disease on a head of grain the next season. These spores or Seeds remain on the surface of the grain or bags, implements, etc. "that come in contact with the grain over winter and in this way infect the seed grain before it is sown. When the seed begins to germinate the' Smut spores start to develop and infect the young growing plant. As the plant develcps the Smut also develops uati Jthe grain heads out. It is at this stage that the disease first becomes readily no- ticeable to the naked eye, as it usually consumes the entire head, converting it to a dark brown or black powder ready to carry the fungus over another winter, It is sometimes thought that the discase may remain in the ground over winter but this belief 15 not generally conceded. However, the successful farmer does not usually sow oats twice in succession on the same ground, therefore infection from this source would not be possible. 'Loose Smut of Oats, while a serious disease, is not difficult to control, the formalin treatment being quite effec- tive. The method usually recommen- ded is as follows:- Dilute one pound or one pis of Formalin in about 35 gallons of water.
