He did especially good work for the Boy Scouts. a work for which he was naturally and peculiarly adapt- ed. Mr. Eaton has been appoint- ed a major since leaving Oshawa a year ago, and now he has just been appointed to the staff of Lieut.-Col. Cecil Williams, Assistant Director of Recruiting for Canada. Mr. Mack Soanes, who. has been connected with the Oshawa Y. M.C. A. for over five years, resigned to take a place on the staff of Lieut. Col Cecil T. D. McPherson said something worth repeating when, in' speaking recently in 'I'oronto he said that it was a great privilage to be of 'military age at this time, to be able to play a man's part in a man's game. . "In a short time" he said "recruit- ing meetings will not be necessary, and eligible men will know what it may mean if they do not soon offer themselves. The thousands of young men who will return from this war will occupy the premier place in the esteem of the people. Do you want to be one of them? The opportunity will not much longer be open to you, and 'you.will regret it to the end of your days if you donot accept it." It is yet time to get into line and to enlist in the battalion that is being raised in this county. Motor Licenses Whitby. Gazette With the 'object of facilitating the securing of motor licenses, Hon, Fin- lay Macdiarmid, Minister of Public Works and Highways, has approved plans of the Highway Department for the issuing of licenses through some forty officers of the department scat- tered throughout the province. By the new plan, a motor car owner. in- stead of having to write to Toronto for his license, will be able to apply to an official in his home county. The change will prove a great con- venience, to motorists outside Toron- to, and it will be a valuable extension of the work of the department since itis planned to make each man au- thorized to issue licenses a special re- presentative of the department who .can be called upon for information of any kind and attend to various local matters that crop up. The department will not pay defin- ite salaries, the remuneration of the agents being in the form of a fee of 25 cents for each license issued, ex cept those issued in Toronto, where only 15 cents each will be paid. In addition to the County Officers the Department is appointing six Customs officers at border points as issuers and paying them for each permit issued to foreign tourists coming in. been appointed the representative for South Ontario, and from him in the future all motor licenses must be ob tained by residents of the County. Among the other representatives are--Durham and Northumberland, Henry Reynolds, Port Hope; Simcoe, R. E, Webb, Barne; York, W. G.
