'guest of Mr. and Mrs, Jus "Stone- y 'We are pleased to know that Mr.| William Willard is recovering rapidly from the injury he received a couple of weeks ago, when he fell upon Ee ~ cement floor at his store. At that time his face was so badly cut that he | had to have twelve stitches put in. Now the wound has almost completely healed. Mrs. Harper 1s returning to'her " "> home in Edmonton this week, her 'mother, Mrs. Willard, being much better. Mr. Allan Goode has raised the frame of his creamery and the work of completion is rapidly going forward. # This will be a fine building when "finished and a valuable addition to town property. Mr. Norman Sandham, of Toronto, isthe guest of his uncle, Mr, ¥. W, Melntyre. Mr, Wellesley McCabe is visiting Mi. Gorden Whiteway at Fenton Michigan. \ The town powerhouse is well supplied with coal for the present. It takes continual application to secure coal these days and the Electric Light and Waterworks Commission, Mr. W. L. Parrish and Mr. S. Jeffrey deserve the thanks of the town for their work 1n this respect. School opens Jan 7 Owing to the scarcity of coal the Port Perry High and Public Schoo will not re-open until Monnay next, January 7. Allin, Rector of All Saints Church Whitby, Hilda May, daughter of, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Raines Port Perry to George Almer, son of Mr, and Mrs, Wm. Byers of Shirley, Ont. Can We Raise Pigs? Nearly every townsman will argue that there is "money in raising - pigs." The trouble is that the by-laws of the town @j not permit them to prove their contention. Is the time ripe to make the by-law fit those big words --+#Greater Production?" Victorian Women's Institute The January meeting of the Vic- torian Women's Institute will be held on Wednesday, January 9, at the home of Mrs Robt Mahood, Black- stock." Come and bring your knitting New Books . Several new books have been placed in the Public Library. Subscribers are asked to be prompt in payment of their fees as the need of money is unusually urgent Itis a difficult matter to keep a libaiay in good running order on the small income & available. Methodist Church The request of -his Majesty the King, for prayer in the Fhe Ales, will be observed Methodist Church next Sunday ing and ovenib ens the omination meting 'was small, but not prevent a liberal ber of nominations being. made, as or y For Peeve---Messrs, George Gerow, Samuel, Jetrey, W James Stonehouse, or For Councillors--Messrs Hntcheson, Stonaliouse, Jeffrey rish, Brock, Purdy, Leoritrd, Geo. Brown, Hortop. For Trustees--Messrs Letcher, Brock, Purdy, Dr. Mellow. -Out of this wealth of excellent material, the town has to secure three Councillors, but another 1s needed to qualify to comy the Board to be nominated at a future meeting. In the matter of the Reeveship there will be a contest between Mr S. Jeffrey and Mr. James Stonehouse. At first it was thought that the whole Council could be elected by acclamation but as we go to press we learn that this could not be arranged. Election will be held Monday, January 7, 1919. COUNCILLORS--Messrs. Parrish, Hutcheson, Leonard TRUSTEES--Messrs, Letcher, Purdy, Dr. Mellow. It will be noticed that there are two changes in the personel of the Council---Reeve Gerow drops out, and Mr Wm Leonard takes a place at the Council Board. The retirement of Mr. Gerow cannot be passed without comment. No office holder has served the town more faithfully than Mr Gerow. He brought to the service of the town an abundant and thorough municipal experience, together with an" expert knowledge of the building: of roads and bridges. This experience and knowledge have often stood the town in good stead during the past seven or more ysars he has been in the Council. Reeve Gerow made his office his business. He devoted bis time to the town's interests. He had no set hours, When the' town needed his services, he gave them ungrudgingly at any hour, = Nor did he have: any undue sense of dignity to prevent him from doing any work that might need doing. = At County Council Mr Gerow was an ardent and persistent advocate of the Good Roads System, and inroduced valuable legislation along these lines. The town owes him unstinted thanks for his years of service. Reach Township Evidently the-business of nominating flourished in the, Township of Reach, too. There was no great. crowd present, and no issues to dis- cuss that caused any particular excitement. The following is the list of nominations: For Reeve--]John Stone (re-elected by acclamation) Deputy Reeve--Messrs. Walter Weir, Allan. Goode and William McDonald. Mr Goode withdrew from the contest as his business in Port Perry will require too much attention to allow him to attend to the duties of Deputy-Reeve. This, of course, leaves the contest between Mr Walter Weir and Mr Wm McDonald. ; Eight candidates were nominated for the office of Councillor,-- William Cook John Johnson Frank Crosier George McMillan W W Holtby Marshall O'Neill Wm Phoenix Jos Houldershaw In township affairs those who are nominated must. st withdtan they do not wish fo enter the contest; otherwise names placed on the ballot. This is a poor piece of law and must Su 'wg out badly in electing men who have no wish for the office and will qualify. In town affairs the candidate must qualify before his name ; go on the ballot. i Messrs, Geo MeMillan and Jos Houldershaw withdrew from a contest, leaving six candidates in the field--three to be elected. Scugog Township Scugog folk generally manage to fix up their municipal" affaigs without having to resort to an election, and this year is no exception, Reeve Wm Jackson has withdrawn from 'municipal politics after | several years of service which have brought credit and honour to the Island. #4 The Seuzog Council for 191S will be-- 2 REEVE--Peter Hood COUNCILL.ORS-- John Plowman, George Sweetman, Willan J ~ Jefirey, Clyde Platten.
