The Govern- ment refusé to make any grant what- soever to the County uptil a Superin- tendent is appointed. The Council will therefore go into the matter at the February session, and it is proba- ble that the appointment will be made 3 The Town of Oshawa 'are still pressing their case asking to be allowed to-withdraw as a town cor- poration from the County, and the probability is that at the adjourned session of the Council, February 12, this separation bill will be passed. 4 $75,000 as a Patriotic Grant from Ontario County has been passed and it 1s likely that the entire amount will be levied this present year. As the total assessment of the County is $25,000,000, a levy of 3 mills will be required to meet this expenditure. . The splendid work done by the ladies of the various Red Cross '| Societies throughout the County in raising over $20,000 which was ex- pended in the purchase of various materials and made up into articles of clothing for the boys in the trenches, is another evidence of the untiring efforts of the ladies throughout the County to do their part. On August 21, 1917, the Provincial Road a Provincial highway, and ex- pended $12,000 on same last Fall, The County Road System did not receive the sanction of the Ontario Government until August 28, 1917, therefore the County could not be held liable for any portion of the said $12, 000, Lut the Townships of .Pick- ering, Whitby, and East Whitby are liable for 307 - under a Provincial statute governing highways. A bill of $3600. was presented to the County Council for payment, being thirty per cent of the $12,000. = The members from Pickering, Whitby, Whitby Town, Oshawa, and East Whitby, strongly urged the County to pay the same. ~ Mr: Doble, Deputy Reeve of Brock, with some other members of the Council, opposed the passage of this item on the ground that the townships named must pay the thirty per cent, This contention is fully established by the following telegram which Mr Jeffrey received from the Department on Saturday last: "Account sent in from Duputy Minister was sent in good faith, - believing that the Committee who waited on him was a representa- tive committee of the County.We have not authority under the Act to insist that the County pay that - part of the road passing through Pickering and Whitby.
