Music out of the Storm Prof. Laugher and a quartetté from Bowmanville were to have taken part i0 the musical program at the anniver- sary services at the Methodist church last Sunday. But the storm came up and one of the singers, who came by train, was snowbound for twelve hours at Brooklin, without refreshments. The ather four, who drove, could only get as far as a farm near Blackstock on Saturday and there they had to stay all night. Next morning two of these four people came on to Port Perry and two went home to tell the tale. The young lady who spent the twelve hours on the train also reached her destination at last, and so three out of five of the musicians were pres- ent to take part in the evening service Doubtless had one followed the singers in their trip from Bowmanville ' ta. Port Perry on Saturday night and Sunday last there would have been moments when music would have been far away. That journey will long be remembared by the Bowmanville quartette and their conductor. But in spite of their nnpleasant ex- periences, Miss Cole, Miss Colwell and Prof. Laugher very generously) carried out their part of the program and greatly pleased the audience, the' ladies by their excellent vocal selec- tions, and Prof. Laugher by his mas- terly productions upon the organ. Their vislt of these musicians to our tawn will be-remembered with pleas- ure by all who were fortunate enough to hear them. Methodist Anniversary The Methodist anniversary services were well artended and thoroughly en- joyable throughout, Rev. W. Elliott preached in the morning and Rev. W H. Black inthe evening. Both dis- courses were timely and helpful. - The sum of over $360 was subscrib- ed and'it is expected that the $400 asked for will be secured when all the returns are in. Two Beautiful Pictures Many people took advantage of the opportunity afforded by Mr and Mrs Cutts to view their pictures on Mon: day and Tuesday of this week. The pictures are splendid pieces of scenery, remarkable in their clear- ness, their restfulness, and the beauty of their coloring. Each artist has chosen a subject best suited to' express the individual - genius of the painter, Mrs Cutts selected a scene on 'the Grand River at Elora. Her portrayal of this lovely spot has added to Canadian art a picture worthy of recognition by all who appreciate Canadian scenery. Mr, Cutts has entitled his picture Showers," and the aptness > ¥ the title is immediately felt. It, too, [w : has a river scene "inthe foregrou nd, wont all around. This process; venlory of ones resource, sire to save, applied to every unmar- {vied 'person, or widow or widower hid result in 2 arg cases, in a And that means more general pros- perity and renewed national strength. But a national stock-taking is only incldental, of course, to the chief purpose of the war income tax, which is to provide revenue for the prose- curion of the war is as equitable a manner as possible. The tax is to be graduated, according to one's ability to pay. Those who are in receipt of only a living wage or salary will not be called upon to pay; those enjoying | TE the highest inconres will called upon to pay the greatest amounts, and the great body of income receivers be- tween, will be called upon to pay in their due proportion. Moreover, the purpose of the act is to distribute the burden equitably among all classes. By way of illus- tralion, the farmer will be required to add to the value of his actual income, the vdlue of the home-grown products which his own family consumes. This places the farmer. on a plane with the salaried man, the value of whose services is wholly represented in the income received and against which he must charge all his living expenses Canada has established a war _re- cord that is the envy of the World. It is certain that the Canadian people will run true to form in answer to this latest call of their war government. Sun Life Assurance GCompany of Canada Had 'Record Year.
