Picture Presentation In connection with the War Memorial and Educational work of the 1.0.D.E., a-handsome pic- ture of Joseph Brant was pre- "gented to Port Perry High School by the Local Branch of the Order. Mrs. Harris, the ent, made the presentation, Ber Mrs. Woods outlined the War Memorial work.. The picture is a very fine one, excellent in drawing and Color tone: Joseph Brant (Thay ndanegea) was the Indian Chief of the Mo- hawk tribe, and was born on the banks of the Ohio River in 1742. He attracted the attention of Sir William Johnson who _assist- ed his education. He took part on the side of the English in the French and Indian War, and re- mained loyal to the British dur- ing those stormy years. As the leader of the Mohawks he was able to render valuable assist- ance to his British allies. At the conclusion of the "war he dis- couraged the continuance of In- dian warfare on the frontier. Settling in Upper Canade, he devoted himself to missionary | work, and in 1786 went to Eng- land to raise funds, with which}* he erected the first Episcopal church in Upper Canada. His character: was a peculiar com- pound of the traits of the Indian warrior--with few rivals for daring leadership--and of a civ- ilized politician and diplomat of the more conservative type. He - died in 1807, and a monument was erected to, his memory in Brantford (named in his -honor).. eee] There passed away on May 24, one of Port Perry's most familiar figures in the person of William Mills, who died at the home of jhis daughter, Mrs. F. White, Cartwright, aftet"an illness of a few weeks, Mr. Mills was born i in Dublin, Ireland, some 78 years ago. He came to Canada with his parents when five years old and settled: in the Township of Manvers, - In 1871 he came to Port Perr, and worked in a planning mil later he built a factory for him- self and ran it until it was burn-. ed a few years ago.
