This operetta was given in the Town Hall, on Tuesday evening last to a rather small audience. Had the people known better how good the concert was, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. Styled somewhat as the Mikado, the whole operetta is exceedingly bright and attractive. When the costumes were advertised as "gorgeous" some might have been inclined to take the statement with a grain of salt, but they were--a perfect rainbow of gor- geous color and brightness. Each of the principals are to be complimented on their rendition. If any characters are to be picked out perhaps the choice would be the Prince and Princess, Lilla and Alain. "The chorus parts were well sus- tained and sung in fine spirit. Mrs. D. Robb and Mrs. Brown, who con- ducted the operetta, deserve great praise for their excellent training. This visit from Orono musical art- ists shows how much can be plished by a community which works together. They 'have left for those who attended the entertainment the memory of a very pleasant evening and a "gogeous" spectacle that will - be remembered. ais little solo and chorus, with its CHANGES OF MINISTER The following changes were made at the recent Methodist Conference, as they affect this community: Rev. F. Thompson, Manchester, on June 3rd, when at the hour of three o'clock on a beautiful afternoon, Miss Clara Irene Thompson was married to Mr. Joseph R. Ward, of Utica, by Rev. W. Higgs. There were present the parents of both bride and groom, many of their relatives and a few other friends, The bride was given away by her father, while the wedding march was played. After congratulations all sat down to a sumptuous wedding supper. 1'he bride was the recipient of many beautiful and useful presents, tokens of the esteem and affection in which the young couple are held. ® The bridal party left for an extend- ed tour after which they will reside at Utica. eres) ( (preerees BOWLING NEWS Mr. John Hayden's "Financiers" made a big spread on Tuesday night by trimming the President and his rink of skips, by a nice margin. A number of the Port Perry Club were in Whitby at the Tournament on Wednesday, but on going to press we had heard no results. PORT PERRY TOWN BEAUTIFICATION It is not always convenient or wise to remove a fence around the home; but there are times when this can be done to great advantage. Two mnot- able instances of this may be seen in the property of Mr. Wm, Willard and the Hiscox home next door. These have both been greatly improved by the. removal of the fences. The real problem of town beauti- fication in Port Perry is found in the proper treatment of the boulevards. Some of these are very ill kept. Sometimes the roughness of the boulevard makes it well nigh impos- sible to keep the grass and weeds cut, Yet it is surprising what can be done when the Council and the citizen | work together. If you need any proof of this just look at the job re- cently done in front of Mr. Bentley's property on Queen Street. That work is a credit to both the Council and Mr. Bentley. If a different policy could be start- ed by the Council in the care of boule- vards, the matter could be improved greatly in a comparatively short time. It frequently happens that a corfsider- able amount of earth is cleaned out of the ditches. If this were used to level the boulevards the unsightly spots would soon be removed. The next step would be to have some uniform method of having the grass 'and weeds cut on the boule- vards. Some by-law could be framed | on the same principle as the snow by-law, which would require the pro- perty holder to keep the weeds cut in front of his place or they could be cut by the street commissioner and the labor charged sgaingt the pre perty. There are some properties with af very long frontage where this law could be modified, and the town bear Party. the. mast , beautiful and well kept town in the province. A great many are doing splendidly, If you want to see a well kept boulevard go up to the homes of Messrs Geo. Byers and McKinnon Bros, and there are many others. We are getting good roads; the next thing is well kept boulevards. CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION Venerable Archdeacon Warren will take the services at the Church of the Ascension, on Sunday morning next. FISHING This year the fishing sea- son has opened unusually well in Lake Seugog. Almost everybody who went out fishing on Monday morning came in with'a good catch, either of muskalunge or bass, or both. The morning was a bit windy, and bass fish- ing was somewhat better than 'lunge fishin We are looking: wird to a good fishing season. .
