MILTON STONE Port Perry, Ont. MRS. JOHN CLAUGHTON A very large funeral took place on Sunday, March 22nd, 1925, when Sarah Stephenson, widow of the late John Claughton was laid to rest in the Utica Cemetery, The Rev. Thos. Laidlaw, M.A., Pastor of the Aurora Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Jos Denny, of the Epsom Circuit, officiated' at the Utica Methodist Church and at the grave. The Rev. Mr. Laidlaw, an intimate friend of the family and pastor of the deceased lady for a number of years paid striking tribute to her worth and sterling character, preach- ed from the text: "The Master has come and calleth for thee" and in glowing terms spoke of the passing of a virtuous: and helpful life which had been of great benefit to the en- tire community. Mr. Laidlaw also read a letter from the Rev. E. C. Hunter, B.A, B.D, pastor of the North Bay Methodist Church, regretting his inability to be present to tell of a life rich in loving ministrations,, and one which had had a wonderful influence over his own life for good. The floral tributes bore silent testimony to the esteem in which the deceased lady was held. The late Mrs. Claughton came from England 71 years ago and landed at Whitby, Ontario. She was born in Hull, in Yorkshire. 'She came to this country accompanied by her father and mother, Mr and Mrs. William Stephenson. C. Lewis, M.P.P., of North East Toronto hefore the Rotary Club at Oshawa at its noonday luncheon recently. The members of the city council and other official bodies were also guests of the club on this occasion. The speaker had only a brief per- iod at his disposal but he gave a very practical, interesting and instru- ctive outline of the question. "The question of transportation," he said, "is one of the most vital moments in any country and especially is this so for Canada with its practically sparse population spread over great areas, reaching into thousands of miles from east to west. ' "In the great stretch of water reaching from the Atlantic to Fort William we have one of the cheapest systems of transportation anywhere in the world and Providence has sup- plied us with it. The three great factors in trade and commerce are production, con- sumption and transportation, and the last is the most. vital in the matter | fiat, of lessening cost. What matters, if our products are produced at a minimum of cost if transportation charges are great or prohibitive. - "Our water transportation systems should be developed. It is the eheap- est system in the world. One ton of freight can be carried 1000 miles by water at the same rate as one ton OSHAWA WOMAN FATALLY BURNED Sustaining terrible burns abeut her arms, legs and body, Mrs, J. Ferris, 187 King street east, died at the Oshawa hospital, late on Saturday night. The victim, a lady of 75 years had been burning rubbish in the afternoon in the yard of her son-in- law's home, A. M. Germond, local business man, and it is thought that the wind blew the flames toward her, and her clothing became ignited. She rushed into the house, enveloped in flames, which were extinguished by relatives and neighbors, but not before the victim's arms and limbs were practically charred. Fire Chief Cameron, who was sum- moned, secured two physicians, Drs. Cameron and Bird, who ordered the unfortunate woman's removal to the hospital. Her recovery was des- paired of from the first, owing to the nature of the injuries and her ad- vanced age. nmin Mem NOTICE TO CREDITORS Of Samuel James Mellow, M.D, Deceased.
