I was unable to do my work, my head ached day and night, my nerves were all unstrung, and for three weeks I could not eat or sleep. Our brother Scouts in the areas stricken by the recent tornado in Il: linols and ' Indiana have heen~doing yeoman service in conneetion with various relief work enterprises. Bes fore daybreak on the morning follow- ing the storm a patrol of Scout¥ from Sparta, Ill, arrived at Murphysboro, and at once went on duty as Messen gers. Later the*entire troop arrived; joining' their comrades. Scouts from Harrin arrived at 8 a.n. These went directly to the Longfellow School, where they helped unearth ten dead school children. Hours before the Murphysboro troops had mobilized: for messenger service at all hospitals and emergency centres. The Tads from 'the stricken town were the finst on the scene of the dis- aster to render first aid. Their help has been reported as invaluable. They served by excavating ruins and trans- porting "supplies, by acting as order- lies, kitchen police and messengers, as well as in many other capacities in which help was needed, ~ In West Frankfort, Ill, the Scouts under the supervision of the American ed Cross, made a thorough canvass of the entire devastated section of the city, compiling a list of missing peo- ple and cross-checkimg it with those in the morgue and hospitals. Through this service, authorities were able™n twenty- four hours to have a. fairly accurate list of the dead, wounded and missing. It i= estimated that there are 1,000 Boy Scouts in the storm area. Why does a doctor always demand of a patient, as he applies hig ear to the Btethoscope: "Say 'ninety-nine' "? Why 1s that particular number chosen? Why not "Say 'one hundred' "? Sir William Hale-White, president of the Royal Soclety of Medicine, has let the secret out. He explained in a re- cent address on '"Auscultation" (lis- teming) that a physician can often' ob- tain evidence of the condition of his by noting how the spoken voice is carried through it. The trained ear can quickly discern whéth- er the chest contains alr, solid, or fluid. Bince the words "ninety nine" are produced in the larynx, they are the most suitable for this test.
