Scugog Wigwam Driving along the road a few days ago, we saw a flock of birds alight in an apple tree upon which were still hanging a great many of last season's apples. Immediately our interest apple tree. A second glance revealed the fact that. we 'had been favoured with a vigit from an old acquaintance. It was in another country, and in those days known the world around as "School Days" that we first met. He was then know to us by a different name from that by which we now know him, but we find him the sane, "A rose by any other name" etc. The sight of this old acquaintance brought back vividly old scenes ard associations. We thought again of those days when with our play-fel- lows we loved to prowl about in the woods; when we sometimes happened upon a flock of birds, some ashy grey, some colored with red, and the first fellow to discover them said with bated breath "Mopes." These birds were not easily frightened; in fact they had something of a stupid ap- pearance and on that account. no doubt they were called "Mopes." a name that is no doubt a localism. 'In those days when we looked upon bird as something added to the works of creation for the special amusement of boys, we were always delighted when we saw "Mopes" for, they made such good targets: Fortunately for them we were poor shots. Our old acquaintance, once known to us by the name Mope, we now know by what we consider a much better and more dignified name--Pine Gros- beak, We were delighted, to see a flock of them in the apple tree, not only because of old associations, but also because a visitor of the feather- ed tribe is very welcome in this win- ter time and his coming adds a bit of interest to our quiet country life. These pretty birds visit us in the winter time, but they are only visit- ors. They frequent the woods and are said to have a preference for small growth pines. N. Blanchan, in the "Nature Library" says "Where ever there are clusters of pine or cedar trees, when there is a flock of | Pine Grosbeaks in the dtd 8 you may expect to find a pair of them diligently feeding upon the seeds and berries." nests and rear their broods away | from the haunts of men. their song is ~~ | not often heard, and their b "Ed.
