McCLINTOCK PORT PERRY, ONT. x J. x Conroe -- Grant Christie, Robert Brock Township. Reeve--W. J. H. Philp, Roy Park, J. H. Purvis, John Bott, _ Port Perry more than 75 or the appended list gested, and this The outstanding our. seat at the Council Board. Nominations were as foHows: ~~ Reeve--Neil Sweetman, Campbell. | ~Councillors--Robt. Somerville, Jas. Waddell, Geo. A. Rose, Campbell, Madison Williams, Allan Goode, Neil Sweetman. Trustees--Wm. J. Anderson, John Nasmith, Geo. R. Davey, Aylmer Cawker. At the conclusion of the nominations, Mr, Purdy was elected chairman, and the nominees were called upon to speak. Mr. Sweetman said that the 1925 County Council lopped off 1 mill, but Road Committee exceeded estimates and there was a deficit of $18,000 which had to be made up, consequently the County rate had to be raised again. : County Valuation. A Committee was appointed to make an equalization. Cannington, East Whitby, and Uxbridge objected fo report. The matter was re-arranged and these' municipalities had a reduction in each of these cases. Mr. Sweetman said that he had had considerable experience both in the local council, and the County Council, and if he had been able to serve the municipality in the past he would be able to do much better in future, and asked the electors to return him to office as Reeve for the year 1927. Mr. Purdy explained matters regarding the Hydro, pointing out that while the printed statement did not look as favorable as usual, the actual condtion was splendid. There have been a num- ber,of extensions to the plant, notably the installation of power for the Port Perry Milling Company, and an extension of the line to Scugog Island. These extensions will be revenue producers at once and in the near future will justify the expenditure of the $2086.97 for construction, Mr. Lucas pointed out that the assessment had been lower; but the County rate had ben increased greatly--Port Perry being compelled to pay $1000 more than usual to the County. He further pointed out that of the tax ra 35 or 36 mills are already spent by fixed demands from the County rate, local debentures for roads, schools, consolidated debts, Mr. Lucas took exception to the tax levied on the town for the Public Library, claiming that those. who use the Library should pay for its upkeep. He congratulated the fire department for keeping down ex- penses. Of the $8411 of outstanding taxes some $4000 have been paid in since December 15th, leaving this account practically as it was at the end of 1925. He urged the use of the road scarifier and steam roller. Port Perry has some 27 miles of roads, which can only be taken care of by road machinery. Mr. Lucas repudiated any idea of obstructing the construc- tion of the school. He did not think it wise to load up the citizens with a debt of $65,000 without a vote. In placing of the school debentures Mr. Lucas considered that Port. Perry had been well cared for in comparison with sur- rounding municipalities. The best offer for school debentures from Toronto brokers was 97 on a basis of 65% interest. Our debentures sold at 99¢ on the dollar. Mr. Campbell speaking for the property committee said that the Town Hall had paid its way, and the prisoner's cell had been a necessary piece of equipment to be added to the town hall. The weigh scales had not paid its way. Mr. Somerville stated. that some road work had been done and that some 399 loads of gravel had been placed on the streets. Mr. E. B. Walker spoke for the Schéol Board and explained the financial statement wh Reside i N nomination meeting was poorly attended, not 100 persons were present.
