JAMES McKEE & SON "§ Superior Store, St Charles Building, Port Perry. Public opinion will approve th judical findings issued at Osgood: Hall on Saturday by which Mr. M. A. McCallum, FProgressive member in the Provincial Legislature for South Bruce, is unseated on the charge of corrupt practices, and Mr, A. P, Mewhinney, Liberal member in the same House for North Bruce, is con- firmed in his election. ~The case against Mr. Mewhinney fell to the ground, as there was no proof that he had sanctioned any offer made to his Progressive opponent to retire from the contest, nor was the charge sub- stantiated that he had attempted to bribe him by the offer of a "good" position. , On the ether hand their Lordships found that Mr. MeCallum had been a party to paying his Lib- eral opponent a sum of $1,250, under the term of election expenses, to with- draw from the contest in South Bruce. That Mr. McCallum was un- aware that he was committing a breach of the Election Act may be considered some palliation on moral grounds, but the courts cannot excuse him on such a plea, and Judgment very properly, went against him. Both in the South Bruce and the North * Bruce election the object sought by the withdrawal of the can- didate who retired was to unite the voters who were favorable to pro- hibition, an object worthy in itself and quite justifiable where principle is the sole actuating motive.
