BLLISON Who has arrived in Canada from England to make Toe H, a new bro- therhood movement of which the Prince of Wales is patron, better known in Canada. eee Oi THE CULTURE OF THE MIND MUST PRECEDE THE CULTURE OF THE SOIL. The Rev. Dr. Solandt in addressing The American Library Assoclation in Toronto, referred to the report of the British Educational Commission ap- pointed in 1017 to make d survey of the Intellectual and Spiritual back- ground of national life in Great Britain. They reported in 1920, and the following are a few quotations worthy of much consideration. 1. "An uneducated democracy can- not be other than a failure." 2. "The process of education is to fit a man for life, and in a civilized community to fit him for his place as asmember of that community. Edu- cation is an inseparable aspect of citizenship and should be universal ad lifelong." . "The Culture of the Mind must pa the efficient culture of the soil." The Commission found in Denmark a contented, intelligent, permanent rural population which they attribut- ed to the educational system of that country, The children from their earliest years are taught to work to- gether: the Folk High Schools wel- come all people of all ages above eighteen years. In these schools they study without text books or note books, the mother tongue; history, agriculture, economies, singing and the Bible. Through her citizens be- ing trained to work together in their schools and the outlook given to them by the work of the Folk High Schools, Denmark has become the home of co- operative effort of every sort, and so a satisfactory background has been given to the rural life, OO CZECHO-SLOVAKIA TEACHING ENGLISH English Grammar Schools have been established in Czecho-Slovakia. The children will be taught in the English Language. In addition to the day classes there will be evening classes for adults to attempt in some way to meet the great demand for English instruction. According to one authority at least five thousand adults are learning the English language. sie PORT PERRY TOWN HALL Children Doors Open 7.30 p.m, Eve P ICTURE HOUSE Tuesd'y Thurs. 15c. § Saturd'y Tuesday, October 4th ~ ROBERT KANE
