(Toronto Globe) Few ministers of the Gospel resi- dent in Toronto have crammed more interesting experiences into a quarter of a century than Rev. J. A. Miller, pastor of St. Stephen's United Church, who this month is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ordi- nation to the ministry. One of the most remarkable experiences claims Mr. Miller, is the marvellous develop- ment of Toronto as he has watched the population treble and the churches make an effort to keep pace with the progress. He has watched the Dan- forth district develop from a market garden community into a veritable city. : Storm Tore Down Tent. Twenty-five years ago, when Rev. nue Presbyterian Migsion--which is now known as Riverdale Presbyterian Church -- the business district of Danforth comprised two grocery stores, one at Logan Avenue and the other at Greenwood Avenue. Between Broadview and the end of the Dan- forth there was but one other church The tent erected for services by the Pape Avenue Mission fell a victim to the terrific gale and storm which visitéd Toronto twenty-five years ago last Thursday night, and was torn to shreds. A new tent wag secured and served as a tabernacle for the first communion service of the mission with 54 charter members. In his association with mission work on Danforth Avenue, Rev. Mr. Miller witnessed the building up of "Shack- town" during a year of great difficulty for newcomers when The Globe Shack- town Fund brought relief to many in the East End and Earlscourt sub- urbs. About twenty years ago Rev. Mr. Miller won distinction as a pastor with the Pape Avenue Presbyterian Church boasting the largest cradle roll in the world, and a membership of 500 babies. It 'was in the years 1916-17 that Rev. Mr. Miller's ability was put to a test when in an effort to speed up production the Government Employ- ment Bureau was organized. During the years in which Mr. Miller was in charge of the bureau hundreds of boys and girls of high school standing were sent to the farms to work. Among the churches ministered to by Rev. Mr. Miller during the 25 years of his pastorate have been Pape Avenue Mission, the Greenwood Ave- nue (now Kimbourne Avenue Church), Dixie, St. Cuthbert's, Fairbank, Long Branch, Lakeview, St. Luke's, Warden Park and St. Stephen's. He had a large part in the founding of Tod- morden - Presbyterian, Runnymede United, Manor Road United and Lea- side United Churches, For 24 years of the last quarter of a century Rev. Mr. Miller has served as a trustee on the board of the House of Industry; has been a director of the Big Brother Movement since its inception in 1913, and manager of St. Andrew's Society since 1915. He was also on the board of the Upper Canada Bible Society for some years, and at present is acting on the Neighbour- hood Workers' Council. --_---- By H. C. TUCK, OPT.
