High honor came to Blackstock, when Dr. Herbert A: Bruce, Toronto, was appointed Ontario's new Lieu- tenant-Governor. He was born in Blackstock, a son of the late Stewart and Isabella Bruce. He attended Port Perry High School, then graduated from the University of Toronto in 1892 with the University gold medal and Starr silver medal. He took post graduate courses of study at the uni- versities of London, Eng., Paris, Ber- lin and Vienna. In 1909 he was ap- pointed chief of the surgical service of Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Bruce was elected. president of the Ontario Medical Association in 1911- 12, He is a member of the British Medical Association, a Fellow of the American Surgical Association and a member of the Canadian Medical As- sociation. He was also Vice-President of the Congress of Surgeons of North America in 1915 and President of the Academy of Medicine the following year. He served with the Canadian Army Medical Service until 1917 when he was appointed consulting surgeon to the British armies in France. With this appointment he was promoted to the rank of Colonel. While overseas he married Miss Angela Hall, of Corn- wall, England, and they have one son Maxwell. In 1918 Cal. Bruce was sent as a delegate by the British Govern- ment to attend the meeting of the American Association in Chicago and in company with Sir Arbuthnot Lane and Sir James McKenzie, famous British surgeons, he gave a series of addresses in many American cities, He has made a number of contribu- tions to medical publications and is the author of "Politics and the C. A. M.C." Col. Bruce is a member of York, Toronto Hunt, Toronto Golf, and Rosedale Golf Clubs, and the British Empire Club of London, Eng.
