Mr. Jack Cockburn, who has been holidaying in town, has returned to his home, The Auxiliary of the Women's Mis- sionary Society of the Presbyterian Church met at the home of Mrs. S. Robertson, on Monday, May 8th. We were privileged to have with us Mrs. D. Archer, of Oshawa, a former officer and member of the Port Perry Auxiliary. She thought we had much reason to be encouraged by the at- tendance and interest shown in the work. There were twenty present. The Study was the Chinese in Can- ada. TOWN HALL STAGE RENOVATION The stage and platform at the town hall is in a state where it needs con- siderable repairs and improvements, and suggestions have been made of finding some way whereby funds could be raised for this purpose, ex- tending over a period of from one to two years, with this idea in mind. A small temporary committee has been formed, and on Friday evening, May 19th, the first step toward creating this fund will be started. Arrange- ments have been made with a group from Uxbridge to present the dra- matic Cantata "Queen Esther" on the above date. The group comprises 90 _ actors in full costume, befitting their parts, specially loaned for the oc- casion, and will be under the direction of Miss Ruby Nicholls, Mus. Bac. Henders died with un- expected suddenness at her home in Port Perry. She had not been ill and although in advanced years she ap- peared to be in excellent health, She had, however, been warned some years before that she must not overwork. Sunday morning was beautiful and bright and, just before rising, Mrs. Henders had spoken with pl of the loveliness of the morning. While dressing she suddenly collapsed and died before assistance could be se- cured. Mrs. Henders was born in Cart- wright. Her maiden name was Esther Philp. = There was a large family which included Joseph and William, who both entered the ministry, and who have died within the past few years, There are also Robert Philp and R. W. Philp, both of Cartwright; |} and Mrs. Wesley Philp, of Arthur.
