x wp" 14-- Scugog Oitizen -- Tuesday September 24, 1991 Aerostar marries form and function By Cathy Olliffe The 1992 Ford Acrostar XLT Sportgeally has me going. How, 1 wonder, can something as downright practical as the Acrostar feel so completely luxuri- not a luxury sedan, I¢ handled rock solid and smoothed Out the bumps on the backroads like they weren't even there. The sleek, compact exterior of ous? Driving along Hwy. 7A during 'the Road Test, I had to keep remind- ing myself I was in a mini-van and the 'A tar XLT Sport hasn't Jranged much since 1991 -- with its premium wheel covers, lower "wo-tone paint treatment, sporty flares, trim and front scoop, why change? Ford has painted the grill and installed bulb halogen head- lamps to replace sealed beam: halo- gens, making it a litle easier come replacgment time. But other than that, the Aerostar's good looks haven't been tampered with. The big news is on the inside. Suddenly, the reasons you would want 10 buy a mini-van (you've got a big fami- ly, you'r¢"a hockey coach, you run a delivery business) Sostv ic) take on a whale sev aspeck fun! Take the Hii for example, loaded up with a cupholder for the kids in the middle seat, an eyeglass holder, a place for your cassettes and the neatest coin holder I've ever set eyes on. It's the kind of console you could just sit and play with! What's even better, for parents who don't like, mp or heavy metal music, are headphone jacks in the back seat. No more fights over the music (which comes to you. in AM/FM -tassette stereo, naturally). But the biggest difference is the gearshift, which has moved from the floor 10 the steering col- umn making driving a whole lot casier. Actually, driving has been made casier, pen- od thanks tO g the changes in the dash- board. I'd ficver driven the van before L- didn't have any trouble at all finding any of the eontrols. Their locAtion makes sense and as a result, evéry- in my life, but I. thing's easy to find. I like that. I also like the driver's side air bag and the rear-outside shoulder strap seat belts. When you've got your family. in the van with you, you're carrying the world's most precious cargo. It's reassuring 0 know Ford has made the Aerostar even safer, for driver and gers. : 0 That's the 'thing about the Aerostar -- you're buying it because you need lots of passenger and/or cargo space. You've got it, no problem, especially if you buy the cxtended length model. But you're also buying into so'much more, A 3.0 lire V-6 multi-port engine, air conditioning (regular or high capacity), dual captain chairs with Jumbar support, deluxe door trim pancls with carpeted lower sec- tions and map pockets; and a leather-wrapped steéring wheel -- it's all there, making driving a sheer pleasure. The only problem I can see hav- ing a vehicle this comfortable with this much scating capacity, 1s that everyone in the neighbourhood is going 10 want to go out for a dnve with you! But hey, when driving is this much of a treat, why not? Base price of the Ford Aerostar is $19,900. For a test drive, see Taylor Ford Mercury, Hwy. 7A West, Port Perry. Or call 985-4451.
