And for the cham- pionship, last year's winner Jay Neill won a match that lasted nearly three hours over John Rickey. The scores were 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and this-was a real crowd pleaser. .. v The depth and calibre of play in the Port Perry Tennis Club continues-to improve. With over 40 compétitors in this year's championships, the future never looked brighter, ~ Legion Squirts cap a fine season with silver The Port Perry Légion Squirts capped a fine season by. winning the silver medals in their league tournament held recently in Thomhill. g _ The boys got things going with a 7-3 win over Pickering as Jason Heyworth struck nine along the way. *Offense was supplied by Casey VanSchagen with two singles, Ryan Moynes and Doug Short each witha triple, That win put the Legion crew against their arch rivals from Stouffville who finished first over the regular schédule with Port in second spot. Their-games ovér the season were always hard-fought affairs and this one was no different. Marc Versage got the Legion going with a base hit, stolen base and run scored as Doug Short rapped ou a single. The defenses on both teams was in top form as hits and runs were very hard to come by. Port held the powerful Stouffville attack at bay until the bottom of the 7th when things _began to come apart for Port Perry. A walk, an crror and base hit and the game is over in a hurry. Heyworth struck out nine in going the distance and singles came from Versage, Short, Heyworth, Jason Best and Ryan Williamson.In game three, Port faced Pickering again and took a 3- 1 lead through five innings. , But they put the game away with four in the 6th for a 7-2 victo- Heyworth again struck out nine and went the distance. He helped his own cause with two singles and Best, Short and VanSchagen did the same. Single hits went to Scott Jeffrey, Ryan Hawkins, Ryan Puckrin and Owen St. John, That win set the stage for anoth- er match-up with Stouffville with players and fans expecting a real thriller. Jason Best scored early for Port on a fielders choice but Stouffville -Scugog Men's Hockey action heating up the local ice pad Troy Glazier had a superb game between the pipes as Crandells shut down Fitzg 2-0 in Scugog Mens Hockey League action Sunday moming. It was week two for the (older) boys of winter and Donovan Smith provided all the offense Crandells would need as he netted both goals. Rob Kroonenberg chipped in 'with two assists with Roger Moase and Rick Olaisen each get- ting a single helper. 'The second game of the mom- ing was another exciting end-to- end affair with Andersons getting the upper hand 10 squeeze past Compton 4-2. '. Carl Durward notched a pair for the winners with Joe McIntyre and Doug Suppelsa getting the others, along with one assist each. Peter Lane had two assists with singles to Ron Zaparaniuk, Darcy Milligan, Rick Sheehey and Rich » Huggins. Counting for: Compton was. © Rod "Lindros" Connelly with both goals. Terry Flieler picked up an un- assisted goal for the Carpenters with R. Brownell getting other from Gary Lance dnd Fred Moffat. Brian Samis from Wayne Fox counted the lone marker for Van and Truck World. It was a one-sided affair in game four as Nortons rolled over Sportsland by a 6-1 margin. Dave Dickson clicked for two Ray goals in the winning cause. Brad Hurst, Randy Prosser and Ken Davidson each helped with a goal and assist and Jason Warner picked up the other marker. Brian Norton had two assists for his team with single set-ups by --Doug Brown, Richard Sakanashi, John Woodward, Dave Roth and Zaparaniuk. Doug Bache tallied the lone marker for Sportsland with just 1:21 left in the game. VanSchagen, tied the game in' the, third when he was driven home by Heyworth's single. In the fifth, Port made a move as Short led off with a single, fol- lowed by a walk to Williamson. When VanSchagen singled the bases wero loaded with none out. Heyworth hit a liner to third and Short got hit with throw as he was trying to scor¢ at home. He was safe but a shoulder injury knocked him out of further action. This seemed to take the wind out of Port's sails as they went down in the inning with no further damage, and Stouffville fought back with five to take 7-3 lead. Jason Bést hit a long home run, but that wasn't enough as Stouffville went on to win the game 9-4 and claim the gold medals.
