Well, you can sce a few elec- tion signs popping up on lawns; there are stories in the local media about hopeful candidates, and at Monday afternoon council meet- ings, there is a bigger than usual gallery. For the last couple of weeks, some of those hopefuls seeking office have been "hanging out" in the chambers, watching proceed- ings, taking the odd note or two, and generally. trying to get a han- dle on the job they hope to have in about six weeks time. For much of the three-year term the chambers are pretty much deserted as council deliberates on the business of running Scugog (except of course when citizens get mad about something and come through the doors waving petitions) But with an election just around the corner, the hopefuls are taking it all in. On Monday afternoon, for cxample, there were six declared candidates taking in the proceed- ihgs from the gallery (actually just a row of chairs) And they 'stayed for the entire meeting. Yes, there is an election in the air, Township honours Citizen columnist Scugog Citizen environmental columnist Janet Banting has been presented with a "community ser- vices award" by Scugog Township.
