At the beginning of cach match, goals are set for the client. Colleen says there is supposed to be "an end result," but sometimes the best she can be is an objective lisgener. "You never really coun- sel people, you just listen 10 what they have to say." Many clients, She says, have problems coping with life's stress- esy and nobody to help them cope. Friends and family members don't necessarily make good objective listeners, and clients can often feel alone in the world. Just having a volunteer like Colleen show up once a week can help give the client a sense of security. A sense that someone cares. "By the time they get to 'you, they really feel they've been left with no resources, and no one cares. Basically, you are a support to people who are havinggprob- lems coping with the stress and problems of day-to-day life. You Just try 10 get them to be realistic \ about what their life situation is. And the best way to deal with it, day by day." Colleen has been a volunteer for many years, starting when her children were young with volun- teer work at schools and at the hockey rink. "I'd done different types of volunteer work around town, and I'd always thought there was a need for a program like this in the rural areas. I don't think there's anybody who doesn't know someone who'd had an emotion! illness." You'd think Colleen would get a litle stressed out herself, help- ing other people handle their own stress, but the training COPE vol- unteers receive help them deal with it. She's talked to other vol- unteers and they all seem to feel as fulfilled as she does. "It's mot entirely selfless. You do get some sausfaction, espe- cially if the person you work with is showing some improvement." And along with her volunteer work with COPE, Colleen contin- ues to raise her family and work for the Red Cross.
