ENTERTAINMENT A terrific little movie FRANKIE AND JOHNNY } Directed by Gary Marshall. Now playing at Oshawa Centre Cinemas There are moments in "Frankie and Johnny". that are as good as movie gek In fact, while watching this film I forgot who Al Pacino and Michelle Pfciffer are. They became the desperately lonely people they portray in this new film, creating such full-bodied 'characters, there wege times 1: for- got I was waiching a movie. In our lifetime, we have all known somebody who spends Saturday nights alone, perhaps like Frankie (Pfeiffer) watching videOs and eating ice cream. They walk around with a disappointed look on their faces, saddened by what their lives have become, but more so because they lack the courage to "change things. { These 'are the types of people 'who populate this film; lonely men and women, seergingly content in® their misery because they feel it is too late to alter their lives. They fear what may not happen, as much as they fear what may. Director Gary Marshall has fashioned a terrific little movie from the off-Broadway play by Terence McNally "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lunes" a one-set, two character drama, STABLES With McNally refurbishing the script, opening up the story and breaking up the scenes, the play- wright has allowed the director to deepen what the drama was saying about loneliness. I must admit, the realism of the movie surprised me. Marshall was the director who. gave us the like- able, but ultimately Hollywood hooker love story "Pretty Woman" chance for happiness for both, an proceeds 10 woo her. His good nature, his sincerity, gradually chips away at the fortress Frankie has surrounded herself with. In the film's strongest scene, © she breaks down, sobbing her con- fession of fears, the abuse 'she has endured and the nagging. fear it may all happen again. With Frankie and Johnny, the director had the courage, and perhaps 'the good sense to allow the gritty lives of these people to be portrayed as just that. Johnny (Pacino) is a sad-eyed man, just out of jail who winds up as a short-order cook in a greasy spoon in New York City's Hells Kitchen. But he's a likeable kind with a passion for life because he is aware his time for having fun is fast running out! Working as a waitress in the cafe is Frankie (Pfeiffer) a solitary woman who has good reason to fear romance and involvement. Yet Johnny believes in them; he sees in her a formerly the Greystone Restaurant MANAGEMENT NEW MENU OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY at NOON Friday, Saturday & Sunday - FRESH TROUT 10 0z $13.95 Now is the time to book for your Christmas Parties. What makes this movie work is * the near perfect performance of Pacino and Pfeiffer, a chemistry that is unique in its freshness. Pfeiffer has rightly earned the reputation of being one of the best anywhere, surp all her previous work with this strong performance. This is the same women from Dangerous. Liaisons (1988) the Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and Russia House (1990) a virtulll chameleon who can disappear irito a role with the greatest of ease. The vulnerability she conveys as Frankie is touching, but what makes her performance work is that we can see the woman inside trying to come out of her shell, yet with the knowledge of knowing why she is there in the first place, One frightful look from Pfeiffer speaks volumes. Le Pacino gives a 'Jvery likeable perfor- as Johnny, the ager-to-please cook Jwho wants nothing Jmore than a second hance at life. In my last review, I mentioned Pacino had carried Godfather 3 with a strong, dramatic terrific, in particular Canadian Kate Nelligan portraying the brassy wail Cora who is aggressive in taking Pacino to bed, leaving him in virtual shock. Comic Janie Morris is wonderful as the sour, old « wallflower Neda and Hector Elizonoda is fine as Nick, the pro- tective, good-hearted owner of the dirfer. Some critics have carped that the film lacks the realism of the play, that Gary Marshall has creat- cd another "white-knight-rescues- woman" romance. I strongly dis- agree with that. Acting in its purest form is when you forget you are watching a movie or play, and become involved. That h: . Marshall has created a wonderful sense-of real- ism through strong acting, atmo- perf He spheric locations and simplistic last year for a hilarious role in Dick Tracy and in Frankie He may x be the most gifted and Johnny, bi of - di working today, but give comedy and drama to make the part work. Johnny needs something good in his life, and seéing that in Frankie he pursues her in such a dogged way, his desperation for happiness is worn on his sleeve. Marshall's supporting cast is the man credit, he has created a movie that deals with Ioneliness in such a way, we feel it. So few movies on the screen today are about people, but rather cyborgs and terminators. * I foundsthis one refreshing and Sehally honest. Hello to Hello Dolly!
