Cawker Scugog Citizen -- Wed, Jay; October 16, T0115 Pee Wee Legionaires kick off another season The Port Perry Pee Wee Legionaires have kicked off another season of hockey. Coaches Gary Geer and Ed Teno like what they are seeing out there so far in thi ng season, but they are suiffing line combos and working on different strategies. On the rod in Ajax, the Legionaires fell behind 1-0, but Darryl McEnaney tied the contest with his first of two before the end of the frame. Tim Fitzpatrick drew the assist on this wrap- around effort. With Ajax leading 2-1, the third period featured plenty of hard-hitting end to end action. McEnaney again got the equal- izer with help from linemates Fitzpatrick and Mike Morden. Luke Carnaghan and Brian Bickmore performed well in the net, holding off the Ajax autack- ers. Last Friday evening, the Legion boys hosted Cobourgsand the visitors jumped into an early 2-0 lead. The team seemed a bit down, but in the second period, the boys got their act together and staged a comeback as Kevin Hobbs and Matt Philips turned the red light on with help from Morton, Jeff Clarke and Tom Chambers. But Cobourg was far from dead and with less than five to play in the game, scored what looked like the winning goal. Fitzpatrick was hauled down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Cool and calm, he zoomed in on net, gave the goalie a deke or two and then slipped the old disc between the pads to knot the affair at threes. That brought the home town crowd to its feet and the fans were really on their feet when Hobbs nailed his second of the game. on a set-up from Fitzpatrick and Todd Parry for a 4-3 victory against this tough opposition. The Legionaires took their show "on the road" Sunday for a game in Pickering, Both teams appeared sluggish Novice Auctioneers downed The Port Perry "Novice hooked up Saturday evening with a strong team from 'Peterborough and were down by a 3-0 count after two periods, But in the final period, the team started to play much better as Scotty Brownson scored from Jason Whitworth and Braden Tarbotton who displayed some fie forechecking. Just a moment or two later, after Port stole the puck at centre ice, Billy Carr fired a low: shot between the pads of the surprised Peterborough netminder. The Auctioneers hard in the final few minutés to get the equalizer, but came up one " goal short. Sean Jeffrey played well defen- sively and the new "micro machine" Mike LeFort showed some flashes of promise from the + Justynski right side. 'On Friday evening, Auctioneers ran into a very experti- enced team from Cobourg and they went down to defeat by a 60 score. The margin was not totally an indication of the play. Adam Moynes hustled all game at his forward position, while David showed defensive strength along the blue line. through the first couple of periods, but things really opened up in the final frame with seven pucks find- ing their way into the nets. Pickering drew first blood, but Port tied things up and then with a little over a minute to play, Fitzpatrick 'again brought the Legion even ofi a pass from Morden. With ten seconds to play, Tim repeated his heroics to give the team the win. McEananey helped set this goal up. It was Tim gyi of the'game. Linemates McEananey had one and an assist, and Morden had a big night setting guys up as he recorded Mee assists. | Though the season is still in its early stages, the Legionaires are getting fine work along the blue line from Jeff Clarke, Mike Heasman, Chris Drury and Rob Murphy. They have been very effective in handling some tough ~ opposition and this has been a great help to the netminding team of Bickmore and Carnaghan. The boys are hoping that Jody Logan will return to action in the near future. He's still recovering from a broken arm suffered late in the summer, and when he's back -on skates, he'll complete one of the forward lines. . The Legionaires are in action this Friday evening at 9:15 at the Scugog Arena with Lindsay pay- ing a visit.
