F 4) wp 16 -- Scugog Citizen wp 16 -- Scugog Citizen Wednesday, a 16, 1991 c & 'CHS Chargers hopi Peter Fawcett is hoping this is the year the Cartwright High School Chargers make some moves: in the dough Durham Secondary - School Hockey League. Wins have been hard to 'come by for the Chargers, now entering their 4th season in this Icague. Last year, they managed just one victory in league play. Mr. Fawcett, who is psincipal at CHS, told the Citizen last week he's looking forward to the up- coming season, He has several players in the line-up who, play OMHA "rep" hockey in Port Perry and several others are mow in their senior grades'after starting with the team four scasons ago. "These players now have the size and are getting more compet- itive," he said in an interview after a practice session at the Manvers Arena where the Chargers. play their "home" games. - And while he is cautiously optimistic the team will put a few wins together, he said the top squads in the 13-tcam loop remain very formidable opposi- tion. In factg he said tcams from Eastdale, Donovan and Dunbarton are comparable in skill and ability 10 OHA Junior B squads. High school hockey in Durham seems to catching.on in a big way. The League was formed seven years ago with six teams. Now there are 13, including, for the first time, an' entry, from Port Perry High School. All cams will make the play- offs with the top six in an A Division and the others in a B Division to make things a bit more equitable. ' Mr. Fawcett said the skill lev- els in the-League are very high #with the emphasis on skating. The fact that there is no centre red line (except for icings) really helps to open the game up as it does away with those play-stopping two line passes. . The teams play full contact, but under strict rules. A fight will cost a player a four-game suspen- sion. Two fights in the season means banishment for the rest of the year. And any player who takes three minor penalties for any reason in a game is altomati- cally out of that game. Each team plays a 13-game regular schedule with pre-season and playoff games as well, And for the Chargers, there are three tournaments planned before Christmas. They'll be at Sir Sandford Fleming land Ajax next. month and in Newcastle in December, all against collegiate opposition. Players who are on JuniorB or C cards or with OMHA teams at the AAA level are not eligible for high school hockey, he said. The Chargers will open the regular season November 25 on the road against Donovan, and their first "home" game is November 27 when they host Henry Street at Manvé¥ggArena with face off at 2:30 PM. In the meantime, they have eight exhibition tilts scheduled with O'Neill at Manvers today (Oct. 16) and Mr. Fawcett's for- mer team from Henry Street in Manvers on October 23. Face off is 2:30 PM.
