Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, Names break REAL ESTATE bones too "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me." Who said that? [hesitate to imply that it may be an old wives' tale, that would be name- calling. However, having heard this statement repeat- ed, lo these many years, I'm about to question 'its validity. The truth, as I see it, \ is found by looking into the writer's blocks marlene russell pain caused by being the receiver of verbal abuse. Wordwise arc the tools of communication, when used as weapons, their sharpness cuts much deeper than the blows form a stick or stone. Bumps, bruises and broken bones we recover from in time, but how many of us carry in our hearts the pain of being the victims of someone's scorn? Do you remember repeating those words in an effort to find shelter form a barrage of cruel words flung your way? Did it help? Each word, chanted in a sing-song fashion, became a brick building a wall of protection. - "Sticks and stongs...brcak my bones...names never hurt me...sticks and stones...break my bones...names never hurt me...never hurt me...never hurt me...never hurt me..." Hopefully, as we mature, we realize the wall gets in the way of exploring deep relationships. It must go! ) Unfortunately, tearing it down is no casy feat. The first step is recognition that a wall exists, only then can we start dismantling our barrier. Brick by brick we learn to rebuild the wall into a bridge, a slow and long labour. It has been said that the fire of the tongue devours heart and soul, the effects being long-lasting. What is the fire of the tongue? Is'it unkind words? Back-bit- ing? Gossip? How many people do you know whose lives changed (and not positively) when mean words were said about them (or to) their families? Mother's warning still rings in my ears. She said, "You can never take back your words." This knowl- edge may explain why I've been so drawn to writing. 4 It gives me the opportunity to make changes, dele- tions,-and additions * before anyone reads [ESB what I have to say. In other words, a chance 10 practise what Mum also taught. "Think before you speak." Who said, "If you don't have something nice to say about some- one, don't say anything at all?" Ah, Mum again. Mothers have really good advice. Maybe we should start listening to them. As painful as it is being the recipient of slings and arrows (words or. weapons) I think it is less damaging 10 the spirit than to be the one calling the names and shouting the insults.
