Scugog tizen -- VIEWPQINT/COUNTERPOINT John B. McClelland SORRY, BOB. I see that Ontario Premier Bob Rac issued another "dirc warning" last week that if the Constitutional crisis is not solved, the country will fall apart and the pieces will likely end up as part of the United States. Sounds like the same old argument Bob's predecessor used 10 trot oul over Meech Lake. I just don't buy the argument that if Quebec decides to "go it alone," the. rest of Canada would end up as states in the American union. J Frankly, the way things are going at the moment with all the emphasis on the Constitution, the country is on the road to ruin; economic ruin. And when that hap- pens, the Americans will be waiting to pounce on the pieces. NE While Bob and Brian and Joe Clark and all the rest keep pushing this Constitdlion on us, the economy is literally falling apart. Mulroney has given us a five- month deadline (yes, another ine) but Pl tell you this, what good is a Constitution signed and scaled if the jobs have disap- peared, investment has dfied up and another couple of hundred companies have packed up to move south, The litle people of this country, ordi- nary folk who built Canada through sheer hard work, do you hear them clamouring for a new Constitution? No, you don't. What you hear from them is E22 of des- the winter to pick apart the Blue Jay carcass (when they are not doing it to the Leafs) and I'm sure every scribe and every.fan will come up with a theory about what hap- pened to the Blue Jays. Not enough pitching, not enough hitting in the clutch, poor use of starters and the | bull pen, poor use of pinch hitters, etc. ei. 'Some are going to say "choke." Perhaps there is a bit of truth in all the theories, but how about this: maybe the Twins are just a better baseball team. See you in Dunedin. THE ELECTION: So, nominations have closed fimally. Scugog voters know who is running where in the municipal election next month. This is a curious election i in Some respects. Figure this out, if you can. In Ward 1, there are five candidates; ip Ward-3 there are four, same in Ward 4, That's a heavy slate. Yet for the area council s@at, Harvey Graham is in by acclamation. And with all "the talk of taxes this election, the two public schoo) trustees from Scugog arc also in-by acclamation. This is the second election in a row in which Joyce Kelly and Bobbie Drew have been un-contesied. This is not to sug- gest they have done a poor job as trustees, but the school board does account for about 50 per cent of the property taxes collected in Scugog. The Taxpayers Coalition Scugog has clarified the issue of the "candidate pro- file." The Scugdg Coalition will NOT be asking candidates in Scugog to fill out this 14-page profile, which hasbeen developed by the Ontario Coalition. The local group fects the profile form is "too long and 00 peration to save their jobs. Look, I am by no means down-playing the imp ¢ of the Ci | issue, but surely the priority at this time in the his- tory of Canada is to salvage the economy, get the country working again, stimulate some investor confidence. Put the country back on the ils, then try 10 reach agreement om % Constitution. And since Quebec $ 10 the lynch-pin in this whole issue; we should wait to sce what the people of that province decide in theirfnext referendun® Priorities. As usual in €anada, we seem to have them backwards. THE BRUE JAYS: The autumn hopes of the Toronto Blue Jays and their several million adoring fans came crashing down over the weekend as the Twins d d " 1 agree, This Profile as presented by the Ontario Coalition needs some seri- ous refinements and streamlining. Why, for example, would theLoalition want to know the ages and number of dependent children? I have nothing against Candidate pro- files, but they should be tailored to answer questions about local issues. And knowing a candidate's complete employment history' would make interesting reading, but would it help a voter make an informed choice? 1 think not. Anyway, Scugdg candidates will NOT be asked to fill out this profile. Want to meet the candidates? You'll have a chance next Wednesday, Oc at Port Perry High School at an all-candi- dates them three straight s, in the Dome, no less. Falk about humilidion. To lose is one things; to lose three straight in front of the faithful home town fans, well, that's some- thing else again. The scribes and the fans will now have Pp d by the Taxpay Coalition, Scugog. The meeting gels underway at 7:30 PM: Here's your chance to find out where candi- dates stand on issues, why they are running for office, and so on. It helps 0 become informed before election day. Just when Clarence Thomas was about 10 be named tqthe Senate, Anita Hill pops out of the woodwork 0 sgy she had been sexually harassed by him. The timing, to say the least, was more than coincidental. Without knowing any- thing further ghout the case, I sided with Thomas, figuring he was being set up by someone trying to ruin his career. Politics is dirty business, and I wouldn't put it past someone to pay Ms Hill a big pile of money to open up this particular can of worms. But a lot has happened since 1 first heard ghout the case, which has drawn more viewers than dhe baseball play-offs. Like many women, I gon't think much about sexual harassment or other such crimes unless it's there, in my face. And it's been in my face plenty in the last week or so. First, the Hill - Thomas thing. Then I received a shocking phone call from a well known and well respected woman in this community, who told me someone she knows has been sexually assaulted, by a stranger, in the Port Perry a area. Her friends and co-workers are badly frightened by the whole . episode, so last bd week they gathered to talk their fears and hear some advice fro present tives from the local crisis centre. They also invited me to sit in and listen. These women aren't fanatics. Or femi- nists. Or anything radical. In fact, they've never paid much attention to these issues before. Now, they're scared and they're angry. Angry, because female victims of sexual crimes spend far too much time trying to prove they were assaulted; trying 10 prove they're not trashy or silly women trying to get attention. It's ridiculous that victims of crimes have to fight a credibili- ty war before they're believed. It's hard, deciding who 10 beliéve, in cases like this. But we have to believe the victims, because if we don't, the men who commit these heinous crimes will continue to do s0, unchecked. And it has to Stop.
