October Is Community Care Awareness Month and the COPE program Is just one of the important programs under the Umbrella of Community, Care. See story for details. A great ear For someone who listens to other people's problems, Colteen Park seems pretty happy. This 36-year-old Scugog Island woman is a wife, a mother, an cmployee with Red Cross Homecare and a volunteer with COPE, a service of Durham Region . Community ~ Care Association. In all of these posi- tions, Colleen finds herself hear- ing other people's concerns, but as a COPE volunteer, her ability to listen is most crucial. - Through COPE, she is matched on a one-on-one basis with person (called a client) who is under emotional stress. The client is usu- ally referred to the program by a doctor, a social worker, a public health nurse or a guidance coun- sellor, and their problems can range from more or less perma- 'nent bigzchemical mental disor- ders to_temporary depressiol Volunteers like Coreen ' trained intensively to "be there" for COPE clients, meeting with ® them "a minimum of an hour a week" (although the time is flexi- ble, Colleen says) to help them 'cope'. The progfam used to be known as Community Involvement. and Volunteer Program, but no one other than those involved knew what it meant. The new name, COPE, describes what the program docs.
