LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: Last week, many of us were saddened by the news of the sud den death of 3 long ume resident and benefactor of this community, Louise Hartney. In conversation at he wake service with a dear friend of hers, | remarked, "she was a clown for God." Her friend looked at me with tear drenched with the limitations of aging or ferminal iliness with that ever engaging smile which awakened a sense of hope to those on the receiving end 1 write this tribute out of a spir it-of gratitude that your life touched mine and those of my deceased wife and mother. You ded me and others eyes and replied," Indeed she was, such a loving person!" "* The clowns are not the great center of events in a circus. They appear between the great acts, fumble and fall and make us smile again after the tensions created by the heroes we came 10 admire. The clowns don't have it together, Prey do not succeed in what they try, they are awkward, out of balance, left-handed, but...they are on our hie. Ironic pairing To the editor: 1 gemmend Cathy Olliffe for ber article and her column con- cerning a recentssexual assault incident. | share her anger and sense of outrage at violence ing, not with tension, but with a smile. Of the acrobat we say: "How can they do it!" Of the closns we say: "They are like us." The clowns remind us with a tear and smile that we are sharing the same human weakness, Such a person was Louise d toward women. However, | find it ironic that on the last page of that very same edition, is an ad inviting callers 10 "talk live' 10 'exciting girls' about your 'fantasies'. The rider 'over 18 only' must be very attractive 10 Our younger teenagers. One of the causes of sexaal harassment and violence in our society is the attitude that women and just waiting to ful fi 's fantasy.
