Even the un-trained eye can see immediately that this pure-bred . American Quarter horse has that special something: the way he moves, the way. he holds his head, and just the way he looks. « He is a deep, red sorrel colour with white markings on the shins and forehead. He's taller (about 15 hands) _ and not as bulky gs traditional Quarter horses and this:is why he moves with such ease and fluidity. But perhaps the most striking features of this champion are the long graceful neck and magnifi- cent head. To say that he'is hand- some would be a considerable under-statement: | "Northern Cowboy" pride and joy of .owner Louise Stewart of Northem Quarter Horse stables on Scugog Island. In a recent interview with the Citizen, Ms. Stewart said she has always had a kéen interest in hors- es, but it was fiye years ago that she set out to raise and breed American Quarter horses in a seri- ous way. "Northern Cowboy," who is now a three-year old, was sired by a world champion in-Téxas named "An Obvious Cowboy." It wasn't too long before "Northern Cowboy" began to "make a name for himself in rings in Canada and the United States. Last year, he was high points stallion in Ontario, and in 1989 was the Canadian Futurity cham- * pion in his class at Quarterama. Also in 1989, he won reserve champion at-the Solid Gold Futurity in Springfield, the largest Quarter horse show in the United States, And now, his children are start-' ing to make a name in their divi- sions at shows in Ontario. ! MAN NG ES 1 O MCS is is the ' That's impo! rtant for Ms. Stewart. "The feat challenge now for us (as breeders) is with the next generation," she said. Judging tends to be subjective, but over the last few years, there has been a change in what judges dook for in Quarter horses. The trend is to-taller horses, with less bulk and muscle, horses that mpye more easily with plenty of fluidity. "Northern Cowboy" certainly fits that to a t. Ms. Stewart said he has a fine temperament and (like all champions) has a certain "pres- ence? in the show. ring. - Though "Northern Cowboy" will continue te travel the show circuit, his value now is as a sire for Northern Quarter Horse sta- bles. Ms. Stewart said one of her s is eventually to have a horse win a world championship, per- haps with" an off-spring of "Northern Cowboy." ~ "I would like tobe able to do really well (showing) with one of his children," she said. Knowing the blood line, don't bef against it. Body found A body found floating in Whitby Harbour on Sunday has been identified as that of a man who fell from a boat earlier in the month, Durham Police said Jeffery Kindree, 39, had fallen from a 28 foot moter boat on October 4.
