Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 26, 1991 -- 11 a 5 ENTERTAINMENT <4 America's finest chooses a broader canvass In previous articles in this col- "umn, I have mentioned that Martin Scorsese is American cinema's fines{twing director. Scorseaihas, courage that few filmmakers posseSs-in-these times of terminators and cute Child actors. Oddly, he has always had the gifts, however it seems that in the past five years audiences and critics are finally taking notice of this visionary's work. Scorsese's films are full of rage, violenc: most importantly, life and passion, which allow them to spring vividly from the screen, burning them- selves forever into our minds. You leave a Scorsese film thinking about what you have just experi- enced, (you can never just watch a film directed by this intense lie man), you must experience it. Taxi Driver (1976) remains one of the greatest works of the seven- ties, and through the eighties Scorsese solidified his reputation with a series of films that amply display his greatness. Raging Bull (1980) was voted the finest film of the eighties by the national Society of Film Critics, The King of come- dy, which teamed Robert de Niro and Jerry Lewis from director Scorsese and actor Robert de Nuv, their seventh col- laboration. After being called a non-Hollywood director, Scorsese has thumbed his nose at the critics, making a very power- fourteen years in prison for brutal- ly raping and beating a woman. That fourteen years has been spent forging a deep hatred for his lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nolte), who had information ful, very Hollywood is just now getting the attention it deserves as a bril-| john foote liant black come- dy, and The Last Temptation of at the flicks \ Christ remains the decade's bold- est, demanding work, a stunning piece of cinema that went vastly under appreciated. He began the cightics with the superb gangster film Goodfellas, which snagged him a slew of cnt- ics awards, and Oscar nominations (he lost to Kevin Costner and Dances with Wolves). suspense thriller, one that keeps audiences on withheld in order to |_ imprison Cady. Cady leaves the prison with a Ldvicious revenge plot"that slowly unfolds, and ywhat- ever move Bowden makes to get the edge of their seat from begin- ning to end. Unlike most thrillers, Scorsese and his actors, De Niro, Jessica Lange, and Nick Nolte infuse the film with rich, full bod- ted characterizations that enhance the film's realist The story surrounds Max Cady Cape Fear is the newest ilo (De Niro), who has spent the last When my husband and 1 first dated I weighed 107 sounds. That was 18 1/2 years ago. I'm not saying aow many pounds. He's a dessert man so when he came to dinner I'd risk my tiny waist and make a luscious dessert. What was left went home with him, (Remember? Those things talk to me.) Problem was, more often than not it meant the whole pic. The rea son he hadn't eaten any? He would fall asleep, sometimes in his mashed potatoes. I've known about his sleeping problem from the beginning. I went into this rélationship with my eyes wide open (even if his weren't). It has nothing to do Sleeping in his mashed potatoes considered taking him out in a whiplash collar to prevent his head from nodding. At onc of our Town Hall's rip-roaring productions, guns were blazing, swords flashing, actors running through the audience when suddenly Michael woke to yell out, "All for one and one for all." I've had 10 be very creauve in finding ways to keep him awake. Here's one I can tell about in the newspaper. Just last week, while watching the news on the ultimate tranquilizer, I discovered the volume control can be fun to play with. When with boredom. How could it? He does it.so often marlene russell the eyeballs have rolled in their bloodshot around me. I remember] onc particular writer's blocks sockets one last time and the lids have dropped, | evening with friends, it had been some time since Michael added to the conversation. He developed a skill to trick people into believing he wasn't asleep. He wakes up talking, ying desperately to make his words fit. On this occasion he lifted his head and ordered us to, "Waich the blackboard and I'll run through it one morc time." This gave me a clue that he'd been a sleeper since school days and notkely.to change. When he woke up in the middle of our wedding [start increasing the volume. Three pushes on the remote button, nothing » Three more pushes, still nothing. Finally when you think you'll need to stuff YOUR ears with cotton to continue the game, he jerks his head and says, "Very funny, Marlene." You probably think I'm writing fiction and that Michael deserves the chante to refute my story. Okay, I'll give the last word to my husband. Cady's r ¢ 1s taken out not only on Bowden, but his family. Leigh Bowden (Jessica Lange) is an unfulfilled wife fascinated yet terrified of Cady, and newcomer Julliette Lewis gives a sterling per- formance asgthe Bowden's young daughter who is the natural target for Cady's evil intentions. ' The film's moral centre involves the twisted revenge Des Niro atiempts 10 exact on the family, as the young daughter falls from inno- cence, yet emerges stronger than ever before. Robert de Niro may be the finest actor alive, he always seems to sur- pass his previous work, and Cape Fear is no exception. Without ques- tion it is his darkest character since Jake LaMotta in-Raging Bull (1980). The Bible spouting, vengeance is mine attitude of Max Cady is chilling because of absolute convic- tion De Niro manages to convey. His pumped up, tattooed maniac reminds one of Charles Manson, it's an clectrifying piece of work. Jessica Lange, Nick Nolte and Juliette Lewis portray the Bowdens as an American family struggling with various crisis' in their lives. Lange gives one of her better recent performances, making the most out of an underwritten role that would virtually disappear; in the hands of a lesser actress. Nolte is always a terrific actor to watch, his Sam Bowden is a man living on the edge, and never quite under- standing just how perverse things could become. Lewis, in her first major film role is a revelation. Portraying the fifteen year old daughter of Note and Lange, she gives a coy, sexual- ly charged energy 10 her scenes that comes across as totally natural. Her encounter with De Niro in the High School is frightening because we sce her emotions manipulated out | of their control, as he toys with her, © slowly moving in for the kill. Boldly imagined, Cape Fear is not a standard 'Scorsese film in the moldywe expect from Scorsese. Sure fic is dealing with moral issues and the darkness all men possess in ther souls, yet he is directing on a broader canvass. His film has spec- tacular photography, visuals that startle, and a climax aboard a houseboat that, will leave you breathless. This is terrific movie making, as well as being a fine film. Scorsese's interpretation of the 1962 Cape Fear film with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, far surpasses the original, probing into the psyche we all dread, our darkest side. Watch for both Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum in cameos in the film, it's a neat twist. One complaint, the music is a remixed version of the original scor¢ from the 1962 film, by the late Bernard Herrman. The loud, pounding strains sometimes hamper the film, letting us know what's coming next. Granted, Scorsese obviously was not going for any- thing subtle with Cape Fear, but surely he could have found better music. Still, Cape Fear is onc of the years very best movies, a front run- ner for the Oscar, and count De Niro in for best actor ... again.
