Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday November 36, 1001 31 da The best job in the world! [have the best job in the world! I have two great bosses, and I work in a cute lite gift shop on Queen St. It's not a high-pressure Job, nor is it demanding, by any means. | just find it a very nice, pleasant way to spend a few hours every day. Because my husband was in the miliary, | have had the opportunity 10 live in many dif- ferent places, and I have met hundreds and hundreds of people However, in the space of the two years that I have lived in Port Perry, and for the few months I have been-working, I have had the' privilege of really getting to know the Scugog folks: I think everyone should take a minute out of their busy lives right now and give them- selves a pat on the back. Let me tell you why. As | glance out my window, I notice the cars coming to a stop tw allow an elderly lady to cross the street. Yesterday, it was a very confused and frightened dog trying to get across. The traffic halted in both directions No one honked. No one jumped out of their car and stared shaking their fists and swear ing, and no one pulled a gun or knife. In fact, a few of the drivers actually smiled, even though a few minutes of their busy lives were taken up, albeit to pay a kindness. Every day I notice the people walking by the little shop going about their daily busi- ness. Most | know, others are strangers. Most take a minute to wave or smile, Some come in 10 chat, even if they aren't buying anything One of my favourites is Lloyd, who always has a minute to either wave or drop in to say, "Hi!" I think about the woman who was so wor- ried about her mother. She had taken a bad fall and was in hospital, I wonder about her and how she is doing. | shared in the excite- ment of the lady who told me all about she Ink Spots by Helen SlZanne: and her husband flying out west this Christmas to surprise her sister. | know she will come in and tell me all about it when she returns. | laughed with the lady who is about as good at crafts as I am. She manages to get glue everywhere except where it is supposed to go. | waich the litle kiddies' eyes as they stare at the Christmas tree and all the décora- tons, | listen and reminisce about days gone by when they tell me what they want from Santa this year. | remember when my children were young and full with the magic of Christmas. In fact, they still are. The people who work in the stores on my block always have a friendly smile and a wave as they go rushing by. I loveit. Also, when we have a chance to congregaté outside the front when things are slow, we share a few laughs. From my vantage point, | can see those who go into the dentists' offices. 1 like to watch their expressions as they enter. It's even more fun watching them come out! I can also see the funeral home from my window. | wafch each procession as they solemnly wind down the street. My imagina- tion takes off and I wonder who it is that died What did they do in life? Were they happy in life? What would they change, in life, if any- thing? You can almost 'feel' the sorrofas the mourners pass by The one part of my job | don't enjoy is the odd shoplifter. It happens rarely, and 0 me, it will always be a shock! My bosses work very had to make their little shop go, and to me, it is a personal insult that anyone would actual- ly take something, hide it, and not pay for it. | do know, however, that anyone that does that ust be from out-of-town. Scugog people happen 10 have too much class to do anything &0 tacky! , go ahead, fellow 'Scugogites', blow your Ywn horn, take a few minutes out of your day, go and smile at YOU in the mirror. Tell yourselves you're wonderful, you're warm, and you're friendly. Give yourselves a moment of appreciation. And, please don't forget that pat on the back. It's very impor- tant! You deserve it!
