When a kind old man returns to Lizzie -- on Johnston cartoon special 'The Bestest |_jbst in time for Christmas -- the beloved stuffed bunny she'd lost on a shopping trip, it becomes 'the bestest present' of the day for her. A similar thing happened with one of my kids recently. On a trip to the east coast this summer, she left behind an old receiving blanket at the place we'd stayed in Moncton. I thought she'd forget about the darn old thing, but shé didn't, so eventually I wrote to the owners and offered to pay the postage if they would return it to us. It arrived in the mail a few - days before my ro degree: of affection we feel for the people we're giving 10. really believe we all have skills of one sort or another that can be hamessed to create gifts that are special. We also need to feel comfortable with whatever style of giving we choose. After years of feeling dissatisfied with 'some aspects of family gift-giving, I've written to several relatives to explain our new ways of thinking about Christmas presents. 'Gifts that give twice' can make a wonderful ddition to our Chri diti Both Unicef and Bridgehead have logues' with items that make great gifts and bring much- daughter's 7 birthday, so I | hung onto it and gave it to her then. She | was thrilled -- f° and 'when she later told a teacher that this had been her 'bestest present', it confirmed for me what I have long sus- pected. It really isn't the big things in*life -- but the little ones -- that count for the most. It's an important lesson to keep in mind as Christmas approaches. We can choose to spend oodles of time and money shopping for extravagant presents -- but the odds are that people's memo- ries of the big day may not have much to do with what was found under the tree. In my family, we've decided to get our children more involved in Christmas giving this year, since they enjoy making cards, writing stories and doing simple crafts. We're trying hard to leave behind the foolish notion that there is some connection between the amount of money we spend and the needed income Jo Third World tor 738) J n d Bridgehead's 1-800-565-8563. Scugog Memorial Library has copies of the Bridgehead catalogue -- but do note that December 6th is the last date to orgler in time for Christmas. The library also has copies of a handout with gift suggestions and tips on having 'an environ- mentally friendly Christmas'. Let's remember to take a shopping bag with us when we head out, do our best to avoid excessively packaged items in the stores, and find creative ways to 'wrap up Christmas' without contributing to the garbage F 4 salb 5 I'll be a challenge, but then our kids' planet is surely worth it!
