Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 14, 1992 -- 15 de This must have been the week- end Allen Siding Products Tweens were waiting for to show they have the winning touch. What a great time to pull it off...in Port's own 'Country Style' Tournament. The first game on Friday night against Oshawa began on a high note and the girls barely missed a beat the rest of the weekend. We wonder if it was the magical 'chocolate energy pills" the girls took that made the difference! In each of the two periods of this game, Port scored twice and Oshawa managed to squcak one through. Playing before a large crowd, Cara Vanderslagt made a beautiful pass to Laura who fired it high to light up the scoreboard. Brandy Harris strategically scored the next goal followed by Shona Moase and Cara. The assists went to Dana Hooker, Lynda Payne, Laura and a pair to Heather Tredway. 4-2 for Port! With a win under their belts, the Allen Siding girls headed to Sunderland Arena carly' Saturday morning to play Ajax. They were anxious for another win and were not Jong showing it. Cara and Lynda set Laura up for the first goal. Then, Lynda again assisted Brandy's goal. Number three goal was scored unassisted by Heather on a hard shot. Entering into the second period on the winning side of a 3-1 score, the defense didn't let their guard down. Bonni-Jo Norton, Melissa Pereman, Shona Moase and Jenny Storms played an excellent defen- sive game defending Katie Senyk in net. It wasn't until the 1:30 mark that the tables turned. With a couple of Port mistakes and a penalty, Ajax scored. With tension rising, they scored again at the 52 second mark to: tic the game 3-3. The girls approached the third game knowing they had to win or 'lic to stay in the running, for the finals. Getting off toa bad start, they let this 'unknown' Scarborough team take a 3-0 lead. We're not really sure what coach- es Senyk and Hooker threatened between periods, but W-O-W, what a display of Ringette that followed! Bonnie bulldozed through to assist on Lynda's first goal. Soon after, Dana sct\ Shona up for goal number two. Lynda and Laura assisted on Brandy's tie-breaker at the 6:35 mark. Fifteen seconds later, Scarborough scored again. The next six minutes were a killer for the Port team and their fans. With only 34 seconds remaining, Cara made a timely pass to Shona who got a lightning shot away to tic the game 4-4! Off 10 the finals Sunday. The championship game was against a regular league opponent Ajax. This was a fast-paced, end to end game with Port holding the edge throughout. Once again the' 'energy pills' were taken and Melissa Pereman also took an 'aggressive pill'. she back- checked on a breakaway, much to Katie's relief. Jenny Storms was a power- house. She single-handedly kept three Ajax players from her ring while killing a penalty for over a minute, Bonni-Jo and Shona were a wicked duo on defense, much to the Ajax team's disbelief. Laura learned a new defense tactic if playing tall girls...if you can't reach their stick go under them! Katie's moves in net were indescribable. All but two shots were stopped dead, deflected or caught; Katie was superb. Each of the forwards were hot! Lynda Payne played her best game of the season, digging in to score two goals and assisting on one. Brandy duplicated Lynda's points. Heather and Dana also 'clicked' well this game 'with a goal each (Heather's being the game opener) and each of them 'had an assist. Jenny Storms had. two big assists along with Laura and Cara picking up on each. Final score 6-2 for Allen Siding Productg; Special' mention goes * to Heather and Melissa, who certain- ly displayed some new moves. An excellent tournament girls! You deserved the gold medal!
