McClelland Strong goal-tending and a gutsy performance all-round staked the Port Perry MaJacks to a 9-5 victory over the Central Junior C All-Stars in the 18th annual Classic played. Saturday afternoon in Cobourg lan Cooper and Marc Dekker, who split the net chores evenly, were, superb facing 48 shots from the high-powered Stars squad. In fact, Cooper had to make some bril liant stops early in the game as the | Stars were in high gear and could have jumped into a four or five goal lead. They struck first at 1:24 as Richard Ferguson hit from a rebound. Clair Comish got that one back for the MoJacks at 8:21 as he snapped a wrist shot from the left side that found the corner of the cage behind Chns Massey of the Eagles. Dan Sluggett and Frank Kavanagh drew the assists At 2:34 of the second, Stars went up 2-1 with Merchants Steve Trumbull finding the comer on a shot along the ice, but three minutes later Jim Vernon deflected one through the pads of Bruin netmin der lan Witucki on a set-up by Comish and Brad Menzies. MoJacks seemed to get theit skating legs and their confidence and they went to work for four goals before the end of the middle frame. Mark McKay was sct up by Mike Coulson for an easy tap-in to make it 3-2, Then Jeff Barr flipped home a back-hand off a pass from Jarrett Harman. Kavanagh got assists on both to give him three for the game Scott Erickson and Cornish teamed up while short-handed forc- ing a turn-over that Erickson cashed fora 5-2 lead Kavanagh made it 6-2 at 13:23 with a shot from the faceoff circle and that goal went nicely with his three assists. Dekker had replaced Cooper midway through the second and it was his tum to come up with some brilliant stops. Shane Armstrong, the league's leading scorer, notched one carly in the third as he was left uncovered in front of Dekker. But Coulson got that one back for the MaJacks off a goal-mouth scramble before Merchant captain Greg Corneil made it 74 The teams really opened things up in the final ten minutes with Coulson getting his second from Mark McKay to make the score 8 " » . For the All-Stars, Richard Ferguson, Darren Baston and Nick Dennis were named the game stars, The only thing missing is the Convenor's Cup, the trophy that has been presented 10 the winning team for the last 18 years. League president Andy McLauchtan said the trophy hasn't been since it was presented at last year's game in Uxbndge. And the victory League would like it back.
