'Winter! Whew. Winter hit Scugog Township with a blast last week (finally) as residents shovelled out from under a pretty good storm and then shivered through sub-zero temp But judging from our observations over the weekend, a lot of people welcomed winter with a smile and decided to get out and make the best of it. Downtown Port Perry, Water Street, Queen Street and of the lake, were bee-hives of activity. In fact, from the number of people and the traffic, it looked more like a long weekend in the summer. And it may be just what this community needs to give the local economy a shot in the arm. A lot of those people out there enjoying winter are visitors 10 Scugog and they spend money during their stay here, no matter how brief it may be. Certainly, we are glad 10 see that the famous Scugog Ice Palace opened with a flourish on Saturday because a lot of people took advantage of the opportunity to take a skate on one of the largest open air rinks anywhere. The Ice Palace (now starting its second season) is a marvel lous idea and all the people who devoted their time 10 "making it a go" deserve a pat on the back for their fine efforts. Let's Just hope the co-operates. But people come 10 Scugog in winter for a whole lot of rea- sons: ice fishing, skating, snowmobiling, ice racing, hockey and ringette tournaments, curling........ the list goes on and on. We need these visitors and all of us who live and work here should go out of our way to make them feel welcome and give them a reason 10 want 10 come back. As for the hundreds of Scugog resid who vol their time to put on the events that bring people here, keep up the good work. Your efforts 30 not go un-noticed or un-appre- ciated. Winter's here. Let's enjoy it ourselves and let's work to put a smile on the faces of pur visitors. Hooray for Peggy Peggy Finch deserves a big round of applause. Together with her enthusiastic board of directors, the outgo- ing president of the Chamber of Commerce did what some people might call «she took an organization suffering financially and tumed it completely around. Instead of being an expensively bloated affair as it was in "years previous, Festival Days in 1991 was down to its fighting weight. Events were fun without being expensive, and when everything was said and done, Festival Days wound up mak- ing money. A lot of it. Somehow, Mrs. Finch and her directors had come up with a recipe for success and everything they did seemed 1 tum to gold. Despite the lacklustre economy, the chamber turnaround and the di who are resp chambers black ink should be congratulated. Certainly, it is good news 10 hear of the chamber's new- found financial stability because the chamber does so much for the community, it would be hard to think of Scugog Township without it . } The Santa Claus Parade. Festival Days. The Circus, Canada Day. Can you imagine Scugog without these events? Mayor Howard Hall summed up the importance of the chamber best when he said, "The Chamber of Commerce to me is the backbone of the Without the Chamber of Commerce in Scugog, a lot of good things that happened here wouldn't have happened." rk 2 a diss complete ble for the + AND THIS BULLETIN JUST HANDED ME ...
